Today, I was doing the brakes on my buddy's fg2. On the way to the auto parts store, my car started to overheat. It wasn't at any specific time, (i.e. idle, driving, etc.) The gauge would blip up a bit, then settle back down to regular temp. Blip again not too high, back down.

Then, my throttle cable snapped. As I pulled over to the side of the road, the temp gauge shot up twice as high as it was normally going.

I had overheating issues about two months ago, replaced the thermostat with a failsafe one and drained/filled coolant. 0 issues since then until today.

Questions: What is most likely the overheating issue? And, what throttle cable do I need? Where can I get it? Is it normally stocked at auto parts stores? How much should I expect to pay? Does anyone know of a nice DIY write up to follow? I searched but didn't have much luck.

Did you bleed the coolant properly? That happened to me when I got air pockets in my cooling system.

 

I did not. When adding the new coolant, I had thought I got all of the burps out. So just do a rad flush? Because of not bleeding it properly, could there be any ill-effect on anything else?

Anyone have any answers for the throttle cable situation?

 

Here's how I did it, I'm sure RonJ has a Honda approved method.

When rad's not too hot, open the cap
Turn on car
Turn heater to full blast
Add coolant to radiator until almost full
Squeeze/massage/flick upper and lower radiator hoses
Bubbles should come out, making your coolant level lower. Repeat until no more bubbles come out.

 

You dont need to turn on the heater just put it on full hot. It should take 20-30 mins, let the radiator fan come on at least twice when doing this procedure.

 

Thanks very much guys. You sound pretty confident that there's air in the system, so I'm guessing thats more likely than a sensor being bad or something along those lines?

And still no answers for the throttle cable...

 

i wonder if your water pump is on its way out.

 

looks like i'll just have to go through the process of elimination
