I followed the FSM and torqued everything to spec.

I didn't have a torque wrench that reads in ft/lbs so I used a in/lbs wrench set to 108 In/LBS which should equal 9 ft/lbs. which is factory spec.

I was using a 1/4 torque wrench with a extension and deep well socket to get to the bolts.

If this is not suppose to happen then does that mean I need a new gasket?
I just bought this one from honda ...

Or should I fill the engine with oil and see if it leaks at all?

 

Did you clean it really well to remove any residual oil?
Follow the tightening sequence?
Go back and double check the torque?
Verified its not leaking from higher up on the engine? (camshaft seals? crankshaft seal?)

If all that checks out, might wanna look into a crankcase breather kit. High crankcase pressures can force oil past seals.

 

Lol, I should have said it. This engine is being prepped to go into my car I just took the old gasket off and put on a new one...

I was wanting to verify if I would need a whole new gasket or if this would be ok?

 

the gasket is being squeezed out the sides of the pan...no good..it will ruin the gasket and leak.

years ago i found that the manual torque specs for the oil pan was impossible to use without that happening.....since then i simply snug all the bolts up with a small 1/4" drive ratchet and never had an issue since.

you just need to snug them firm just until the point where you can see the gasket starting to squeeze out the sides then stop...it will be good enough....trust me.

 

Thanks for the help. Just got off the phone with my dad and he said the exact same thing you said lol. His advice was to take the whole pan back off clean surfaces and try again this time with out torque specs.
Said just tighten and watch gasket when it says peek-a-boo stop fighting and move on to the next one.



He was saying since It was only smashed like that for only like an hour that gasket damage was no issue and I should be able to reuse the gasket..
Do you agree?

 

ya you should be able to reuse the gasket again since the engine was never run.

good luck.....if you want some added security to keep the bolts in place, you can add some blue loctite to the threads....it will keep them from backing off since they are not tightened down very much at all.

 

It will probably be fine.

 

Mmmm I have Loctite I might take it apart again And ad some.
I took the pan off and tightened by feel and it looks a lit better.

 

A tinny bit of permatex all around the gasket will help prevent this.
Go see the K series manual shop you will be surprised.

 

interesting...does the k series manual indicate use of hondabond?
where exactly? full bead or in strategic spots?
