Default 96 Accord LX- Transmission Trouble- 4th Gear Grinding when coasting

I'm usually the type to answer my own questions through searches on this forum, but this one has me stumped. As with many home mechanics the transmission has always been a 'black box'

My transmission makes an odd slipping/grinding noise only when coasting in fourth gear. Drives just like normal all the way up to 4th gear, but when I release the gas in 4th gear, the noise I described starts as the RPM's drop from 2500+ all the way down to ~1000 (near idle) -[definitely not normal]. If i hit the gas again the RPM's go back up and the noise stops. Also if I shift to neutral or 3rd gear, it will stop.

A little more info:

This all started when I was 3 hours into a 6 hour drive. I think my car is about to break down for good (230,000 miles is pretty old), so I pull off at the first gas station. Check my fluid levels and the tranny fluid is LOW. Nonexistent is more like it. Took 4 qrts to get the level back up (I checked the level 3 weeks before this event and it was fine). Still made the noise as described, so I limped my car back home.

The BP i stopped at only had crappy tranny fluid; I know it was crappy because every bottle was a different shade of red/purple. So I changed it as soon as I got home and this is my drain plug (last change was only 6 months ago).

The long metal shavings are what bother me the most.

Still makes the noise after changing the fluid. Never any check engine lights, the Drive selection light isn't blinking or anything.

So the question... Is there any hope for this transmission? Is it perhaps something electronic like shift solenoids or the control unit? Or is a rebuild the only cure?

Extra, perhaps irrelevant, information:
-Seems to only leak when driving. Drips very little in the driveway.
-This car has been a highway car. 4th gear has been the gear of choice for many miles.
-2 weeks ago, I was driving through the mountains of West Virginia on the highway, and the car would 'jerk' backwards (like it missed a step) when going uphill occasionally if I was in 4th gear, so I started using 3rd gear. -it gave the code P0135 - Oxygen O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank1, Sensor1). I haven't fixed this yet.

Thanks for trying to help. Feel free to tell me I'm screwed and I'm an idiot for letting the tranny fluid get that low (cause that's what I've been doing, lol).
