98 Accord clutch "sticks" intermittently with different results
First, I do not know much about cars, but this problem has greatly perplexed those that I have spoken to, so I am posting it here. My 1998 Honda Accord is a 4-door, 4-cylinder LE with about 135,000.
Second, for the past couple of months, my clutch is getting “stuck” when fully engaged (e.g. when the clutch is against the floorboard). Please note that this occurs most while the car is in FIRST GEAR. Also, for every time that this occurs, the only way for me to “resolve” the issue is by putting my foot underneath the clutch and then “lift it up” so that the clutch is no longer stuck. Now, unfortunately, this is not something that WD-40 can solve, because different things occur when the clutch gets stuck. By percentage, here is a break-down of what happens:
70% of the time:
I can’t get the gear box to change gears. If I was already in first, then I cannot leave first (and things stay like this as long as the clutch is stuck). If I am not in gear, then I cannot put the car into any gear as I must stay in neutral.
15% of the time:
The car engine will actually start to “shudder and shake” and then the engine shuts off.
15% of the time:
The car will actually “act like” it is in first gear. Meaning, the car will move forward on its own. This is occurring even though the clutch is fully pressed down to the floorboard, but the car is “acting like” it is in first gear. If I hit the gas pedal, then I will speed up (but, the only way to change to second gear is for me to put my foot underneath the clutch and manually lift it up).
Please note that this problem is intermittent. Yesterday, for example, this only occurred ONCE all day. Today, however, it has already occurred SEVERAL times.
Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Check the "pivot' for the clutch pedal.....bushings, spring, ect.
Check the clutch master for signs of leaking as well as the slave. Has there been any work done on the system.

Thanks Poorman. I broke down and took it in "again" this weekend and it ended up being the master cylinder. So, $600 later, the clutch is working correctly again. Thanks - Bill
