ek lx auto tranny reverse problems?
Hey everyone this is actually my girlfriends car and i really know very little about these cars. So right now all her forward gears in her 98 lx d16y7/auto will work just fine no slipping or anything, tranny fluid is still a nice red after 3000 miles of driving. no chunks in there when i changed the fluid and yes i did use honda atf. The problem i am having is that it grinds when going into reverse, not all the time, its like 50/50. If you shift it slowly sometimes its easier to go in. is this a common problem? it sounds like there is an adjustment that needs to be made, can anyone help?
Unfortunately there are no adjustments that can be made for this issue. Its more than likely an internal problem. It can possibly be worn reverse selector collar. Common failure of the reverse collar is usually caused when one is not completely stopped and quickly engaging reverse while the vehicle is still rolling. Its a bad habit and not good for Honda/Acura transmissions. Hope that helps a bit!
damn can just that be rebuilt? cause really we are just looking to fix it and sell it, having a hard time selling the car with this issue.
Yes it can but you run into the point where the trans is opened and it may be best to just rebuild the trans vs. just trying to repair a part of it. With a damaged collar you may have contaminated the trans with metal as well depending on what the filter and magnet were able to catch. Mileage is also going to come into play as well. If it has higher mileage..it may be getting close to needing a rebuild. Keep those factors in mind
