89 civic si wont start?
i have a 89 civic hatchback and my problem is that yesterday i had to leave my car at work because it didnt want to start. and today that i got to work i try turning it on and i did. i left it on for a while then turned it off and went back to work. when it was time to leave i tried turning it and it will just crank we tried push start but no luck. does anybody know what might be causing this problem i really dont want to go and buy parts that i dont need. i was thinking of the fuel pump.any help i really dont trust my car being at work.
You are on the right track with thinking the fuel pump relay. Its called the main relay. When you try to turn it over do you hear a click coming from under the dash or hear the fuel pump priming.
i really didnt pay attetion to that i was just trying to turn the car on. but once i get to work tomorrow ill check both of them. if the main relay clicks then its that if not the fuel pump right? i can easyly get a relay from junkyard. but for a 89 civic its a little harder to get stuff. i noticed that it has alot diffeerent parts then 90, 91. such as seat brackets.etc
If you hear the click, then the main relay is good. Then step number 2 is to listen for the pump if you hear the click but not the pump the fuel pump is bad. But if you hear the pump then its good. I would also check for spark. Whens the last time you did a tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, On my old crx the dizzy would produce a white film inside the cap once a year or so (just cleaned the white film and started ight up every time ) and did the same thing you are going though.

i just got the car and it drove perfect for like 30 min. and back home till now guess its just my luc.lol so i forgot my keys at home and couldnt get in my car. but yesterday i took off the back seat and checked to see if something was unpluged or messed up on the fuel pump connections and i unplugged them and i could see a little spark when connecting it back so maybe there is spark. another thing i just noticed is that the dizzy only has 1 screw bolted in when its suppost to have 3 and might be causing it to leak.im going to take a look at the dizzy aswell its not gonna kill me to check it.
hopefully it is. it would turn it on on my break at 10 and then at 12 i would again and nothing. next day came and it did the same turned on once and never again till next day.lol only once a day. im really hoping it turns on tomorrow so i can drive it ome and work on itthere but at the same time im scared if it does turn on and half way home just decides to die on me then im screwwed.
so i tried step 1 and 2 and i could hear the click on relay but nothing on pump. dam hopefully its easy to take out i looked under the seat took the cover off and rust was there. i just dont wanna brake nothing and get other peaces to it.
so i changed the main relay and started right up.it starts fine now but sometimes like its chocking i got a fuel pump but dont know if its really that.
I had this same problem before. Check engine light stayed on when key is turned to accessories. Changed main relay and CEL clicked off right after the fuel pump hum.
Also ran sluggish the first day or two after replacing the relay. I reset the ECU by pulling the negative battery terminal while i had a smoke. Been running great since.
