Just got a 1997 Acura CL 3.0
for my girlfriend's daughter who is a senior in high school.
A few questions. Is there a history of problems with the automatic transmissions in these cars? The guy I bought it from had to have his rebuilt. Said he accidently put it in reverse instead of neutral. The only thing I notice is the car jolts when shifting from 1st to second and when the rpms go down when either breaking or slowing down. Other than that it is smooth.
Also noticed when I was vacuuming the car that on the passenger side, there is moisture under the floor mats, but the carpet itself doesn't seem damp, but it does look damp. Any ideas on what that could be? Read on Acura World that it could be a plugged drain line on the a/c.
Any other problems that I should know about with these cars? I got a list of stuff that needs to be fixed or looked at, but I got the car for $2800 and it has 136k miles.
The remote doesn't work and sometimes the key does not want to turn the ignition-was told that you can order a key from the dealer for $20.
The covers for the wheels have turned yellow, so I need to replace those-other than ebay, any place else i can go to get these. Also any other wheels that I can get for this car-OEM wheels, not aftermarket.
The weatherstripping has to be changed on the windshield, but the windshield itself is good. Also the weatherstripping on the doors need to be replaced on the bottom-who can do this?
Overall the paint needs some work, which I will attempt to fix. Paint is chipping on the bumbers, so if I can get the metal looking better, will try to find a front and rear bumper to replace those.
The leather is worn and ripped on the drivers seat and the passenger seat is almost there. Solution was to buy seat covers.
Steering wheel is worn, so got a steering wheel cover.
The engine seems fine, but just needs to be cleaned and detailed.
Check engine light came on and mechanic told me that it probably just needs a tune up. EGR, Misfire, Lean, Exhaust Gas were some of the codes.
Everything works, cruise control, windows, mirrors, sunroof, lights, wipers, etc.
Headlights are faded, so will attempt to clean those too-gonna try the 3M kit to clean and restore them.
Drivers side door leans a little, so door hinge will probably need to be fixed or replaced.
Needs two new tires.
I guess that is about it. I have been looking all summer for a car and just decided to go with this one since the mechanic said he couldn't find much wrong with it, other than the check engine light and that it had some body filler and needed two new tires.
I will look thru all of the forums to see what I can learn about this car and perhaps find some parts on here to help this car out. Let me know any info you have on these cars, as I have never owned a honda or acura.
Thanks,
Weaver

IMO-Change the trans fluid and only use Honda Z1 or DW1.
Tune up to set a base line and re-set codes and see what comes back.
Check, clean the ac drain but at the same time you have concerns about the "seal" on the windshield????
Replace the bad tires....check the breaks.
A senior in high school....make a deal with her. You took care of safety issues. want it to be nice (paint, seat or seats, hub caps, ect)...get good grades, apply for higher education, grants/loans, ect...oh yea and help around the house and a few other things....then worry about "looks".....You want nice things...work for it. Not trying to be an a@# but IMO it is time for her to have "skin" in the game of life.

IMO-Change the trans fluid and only use Honda Z1 or DW1.-Will take to the Honda dealer to get this done.
Tune up to set a base line and re-set codes and see what comes back.-I was thinking the same. I know their is a recall on the EGR, so that may have to be done as well.
Check, clean the ac drain but at the same time you have concerns about the "seal" on the windshield????-The seal isn't leaking, but concerned that it might. Just don't know who could replace that. I am guessing a windshield company.
Replace the bad tires....check the breaks.-Will replace all four tires-rear brakes were done not too long ago, but front's have 25% left, so will do that.

Not trying to be an a@# but IMO it is time for her to have "skin" in the game of life.-She got that from her mom. I can detail the car and try to get it looking better, outside of the bumbers. All that will be is just a little sweat and hard work. I got all of the stuff to do it. If I can get that looking good, I will tell her if she does well in school, I will get her two new bumpers and get them painted and installed for her birthday/xmas present. Guessing this will run a few hundred.
Thanks for all of your advice. Tried to post on Acura World, but no replies.
