Default Regional Road Racing: NASA and SCCA classifications

Hi Guys,

I live up in Canada and run CASC regional racing, my plan is to run one race either regional SCCA or NASA (watkins glen/mid ohio type) in the great lakes or north eastern states. Anyhow, there are so many classes it boggles my mind what class to put the car in, it would be great if I have two choices as I have a second driver and can enter the car in two categories for some good racing, we don't need to be competitive but just have some fun. Is HANS a requirement?

Car:
1989 CRX Si
Stripped/Welded Caged (nascar door bars) Race seat, new race harness
Wet weight probably 2100 lbs
B20VTEC engine stock bore (JE 11:0:1 pistons, eagle rods, arp rod bolts), head port, cat cams 3 angle valve job, skunk 2 intake manifold 450cc injectors and probably a bit more.
koni yellows with GC sleeves custom spring rates.
15" Nitto NT01s
Hawk Blues

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!!

Not sure with the mods if you are in spec for Honda Challenge 2, but time attack is easier to class this car.
Hans or any head and neck restraint isnt required in time attack but for door to door you should have something to safeguard you.
Personally you should invest in something besides a helmet to protect you when tracking the car.

I have all the safety equipment, nomex shoes, socks, gloves, 3 layer suit, balaclava, HANS and SA helmet.
Just that my codriver might not have a HANS, that's why I am asking.

I am pretty sure the car is ruled out of Honda Challenge (I wish it wasn't) because of the non OE internal work on the engine, I could be wrong

He doesnt have to have a hans, there are other brands out there that are cheaper.

Can run SCCA STU. National class, pretty much what you have, DOT tires, etc.

Take a look at the NASA Performance Touring category. Fill out the point sheet, see what class that puts you in... also consider asking for a power-to-weight reclass to see where that puts you. Instructions should be on the classing sheet and in the rulebook, but if you need help, ask here.

Actually, PT looks pretty good. Is it open to all makes?
Is HANS mandatory?

PT yes is open to all makes and swaps. Based on power to weight ratio and then points according to all the mods you have in the car. You need all the safety equipment and window net and right side net since PT is door to door . The car is not legal in HC because of the internals and if you run B20 your minumun weight in HC is 2300.
I don't have any idea about SCCA.
Check out the rules in the NASA website. www.nasaproracing.com

If you make the Watkins Glen event in October we have some Southeast NASA driver coming up and there is a North vs. South runoff. This event usually has a good amount of Canadians coming south as well. I will be there. I work in tech and also run in Honda Challenge 2, you wont be dissapointed the "GLEN" is awesome. Sept. 30, Oct1-2 is the event date.

SFI compliant head and neck is required in SCCA as of 1/1/12 for club racing. I believe it is already required for NASA.

I have contacted both NASA and SCCA. NASA's classification is great for both my cars as I can run in two classes with my volkswagen (1.8t with bigger turbo, standalone etc) and one class with the CRX. With that said the info I gathered is that NASA isn't too friendly with our organization, I have to apply for their license, get their membership, redo my medical and vision. So an additional few hundred bucks and visiting the family doctor and optometrist again just for one race, you guys probably know how time consuming getting the medical is. SCCA is willing to honor my current race license/medicals, 15 or 20 bucks for a temp weekend membership and I am literally off to the races, so much less headache and seems like the way to go. Thanks for your repsonses guys, great info, next year we'll run more in the states and maybe run NASA but this year looks like it is going to be SCCA. So about classification for SCCA, are there any weight/power ratio classes other than STU? Most of the classes seem to be spec classes or close to that?
