will jdm engine pass emmissions?
Hello guys.
I have a 1998 honda civic dx. four door non vtec.
I found a deal on a jdm 1.5 non vtec engine.
If i swap this motor into the car will it pass emmisions?
And what would i need to put this motor in the car?
thanks in advance.

there are quite a few things to consider when swapping a JDM motor, but with some work, yes it can pass emissions.
a few things to consider:
a JDM motor has its crank sensor in the distrib, so since your chassis is OBD2 (meaning you cant legally run OBD1) youll need to get a usdm oil pump and install it, because thats where the crank sensor is on USDM cars, and you will throw a CEL without one.
the JDM air temp sensor installs into the air intake tubing rather than on the intake manifold. you either need to cut a proper hole in the manifold to install the sensor, or get a jdm air intake tube so you can put it there.
you need a USDM harness, the JDM one is for right hand drive cars.
in addition, JDM cars did not have charcoal canisters or evap valves, so you'll need to source your own evap sensor and find a place to install it (again, the jdm intake mani does not have a slot for it because JDM cars didnt have this at all)
im pretty sure you do need to run a USDM ecu also, i dont know if our emissions testers can communicate with the JDM one.
because your chassis is obd2, its just going to be more difficult to get it to pass regardless. honestly, i just did this swap into an obd1 chassis and it was still difficult to get everything squared away.
personally, i would try and find a USDM swap or have a buddy who would be willing to run you as OBD1 even though you arent supposed to.

Simple answer. Yes. I had a single came zc pass smog. The smog tech just ran my car and read the numbers. Depends where you go I guess. This was at a little gas station smog place too. Paid 40$
I have a 1999 honda civic with jdm gsr swap, I had all sensors hooked up, had a good cat on, and a obd1 p72 jdm half sized ecu, and when I took it into pass smog last week, the lady tried reading it off the ecu, and it didnt work so they just did the test the old way, up the muffler
and I passed with ease..
and I passed with ease..
