Default Rusty Coilover Remedies?

I'm buying some coilovers from this guy for a good price.. but the thing is that they are RUSTY AS HELL!

These are some Teins.

Anyone got some recommendations to clean these guys? They are pretty damn rusty so I know its going to take some effort into it. Could you guys share some of your secrets for cleaning coilovers with me?

Unless you're getting them for free I wouldn't bother.

Those look unusable and dangerous. I don't think I've ever seen a more rusty coilover in my entire life.

do you guys know any cheap but decent quality coilovers? I would get some springs, but they would get destroyed by nasty midwest winters.. i'd have to take em off and on every year..

You do know coilovers, and lowering springs are basicly both the same right? They're both springs lol

A coilover can rust just as much/as fast as a lowering spring will.

That said, shitty coilovers/springs will rust faster then quality springs will

My buddys megan's red coating is flakeing off on chunks. Not even 2 months old.

My sk2's are beggining to rust in places. They're 2+ years old.

I do. I'm saying that since coilovers are adjustable I'd be able to raise them for the winter. While on springs I'll be stuck at the height. My priorities are 1. Price 2. Quality 3. Ride quality. 4. Performance. Those Blox's look nice btw! thanks!

Qualily should be #1 always.

He was jokeing about the coilovers. You will be unhappy in the long run if you buy thouse.

Take a look at progress and koni/gc. Both are high quality setups, with a TON of people who will vouch for the product as well as the company.

Find me 5 for blox.

My blox endlinks made it less then a year.

As you can see, I'm still a newbie.. I'm thinking about getting lowering springs since they're cheaper and I could afford a higher end set. Anyone want to point me in the right path? :3

Do some searching and see if it answers your questions. The questions you have have already been answered a lot (on a weekly basis almost!). If you still have questions after searching, ask them here!

Eibach, H&R.

Also, what type of shock to plan to run with the springs?

I'm not sure? I'd want to get shocks that go with whatever type of springs I get.

Take a look at the Eibach sport kit. Comes with springs/shocks.

Slow your roll and save your money. You'll thank me later.

What do you want to do with the car? Figure that out, then pick a suspension based on that. Price should not be a factor for something you're going to have on your car for a period of years.

For $600 I love my progress CS-II, but I can tell you right now I wish I'd spent the extra $200 and gotten Koni/GC with the lifetime warranty and adjustable damping. Or used my credit card and gotten AMR. In the long run the price is really irrelevant.

Let's say I own my progress for 5 years. Pretty easy. Progress: $10/month. Koni/GC: $13/month. AMR: $21/month

And I can guarantee you all of those setups will certainly last at least 5 years if not the life of the car. The Koni and AMR come with a lifetime warranty and are re-buildable as well.

Those coilovers look gnarly! Sometimes the only way is to cut the perch's off to get them off, but might not be such a good deal if you gotta spend 100 bucks on new ones (if they even make them anymore). Probably best to just buy new ones.

Give yourself a pat on the back for not buying those. No matter what there isn't anything you could do to save them. When Teins get like that and trust me they do, they are not worth the time or the money. To even make those things workable like breaking those collars loose is no fun. We have seen our share of rusted coilovers, and seized collars and people do not realize what a pain in the *** it is to fix. In a lot of cases when coilovers start to rust and no preventive maintainance is taken you will most likely end up with a paperweight in the end. By the time you realize you have a problem they end up on Honda-Tech either for sale or someone asking how to fix them. No matter what coilover brand you choose to run remember that you must maintain them, some more than others. But in the end if you do not they can easily end up like the picture you posted. That is by far one of the worst I have seen. Whoever owned them probably installed them and never touched them again and let your environment just ruin them.

Most people that do any sort of RUST remedies typically end up ruining the coilover. I know guys who have heated coilover which is a BIG NO NO, and by the time the banging is all done you have pretty much ruined them. Some may function, but look quite jacked up. Shoot I know guys who have tried to soak an entire coilover in a WD40 type solution and ended up ruining them in the end. People sometimes do not know when to quit, and those that do not are typically the ones that end up with a coilover that looked like it was in a car wreck.

Always check on your coilovers, some may form some surface rust which isn't a big deal. Wipe it away with a cloth with some WD40 on it, spray your coilover down with some silicone lubricant as well. Keep an eye out on things cause if you do not you may end up with coilover that look like the above.

You can sand blast coil overs.......

To prevent rust just stop being D2 or ebay ****....Yes even megan racing is ebayish.

Real shocks/coil overs should be made of high grade steal with alum.

Not cheap metal

Progress,koni/gc,amr are the only coilovers (aside from the real high end stuff 5,000+) that should ever be on these cars.

Honestly to god if you buy anything else other than these than you dont know alot about cars period. Alot of honda owners buy shiny **** and dont know alot about cars.
