Big VSS problem! In desperate need of help!
Car: JDM Honda Integra Type R DC2
Hey guys,
I've been having a problem with my VSS for the last 2 months, tried numerous times to diagnose it with no luck. I get CEL code 17 after 10mins of driving, speed never works, and the car runs in limp mode so no vtec
Here's where I'm at with it, tried 3 other VSS' and removed the mph converter with no change, I believe its a wiring issue. The plug has 3 wire:
- Black (ground)
- Black/Yellow (12v)
- Blue/white (signal)
From the plug itself I should be getting 12v from black/yellow and 4v from blue/white, but I actually get 11.3v from blue/white and 4-6v (constantly fluctuating) from black/yellow so its all messed up! I've checked continuity from the blue/white signal wire between plug and speedo, plug and ecu, speedo and ecu and everything is fine. My fusebox diagram is in Japanese so I can't find which one controls the speedo but all fuses are good, does anyone know where I can find an English one? I did check continuity between the signal wire at the plug and the fusebox, and 6 different fuses had continuity :-S Is that right?
AFAIK the signal wire goes from plug to fusebox, fusebox to cluster and ecu.
I'm in desperate need of help this is driving me insane now! What else can I check??
Thanks,
Hitmo

Nope, I even swapped the plug with new pins when I removed the speedo converter. Also my power output to the sensor is all wrong so I know it has something to do with that.
Hey man,
Sounds like you got a good one on your hands. So just a few quick questions for ya....
Are the symptoms you're describing intermittent or always malfunctioning?
-If they are coming and going or ghosting as i like to call it, then I would look into the ground side of all components involved and just make sure the ground nuts are tight or even put some spider washers into ensure of a GREAT ground. Also maybe before a resistance check on your ground wiring.
Second are you sure you're wire assignments are accurate?
-The reason I ask is because, on a car that is key on, engine off your source voltage will be about 11.5 volts or so. Key on, engine on, it will be about 12.8 - 13.0 volts or so. Also your signal wire will be about 4.5 volts give or take a little. Just a thought about triple checking the wires to make sure that is in fact what they do.
If your wire assignments are in fact correct, then maybe its time to visually inspecting the wires throughout the entire car. You could have some chaffed wires rubbing bare copper together that is sending improper voltages to the wrong pins on a component.
Third, I know this is way easier said then done but do you have buddies who you could possibly barrow some parts off of? Start swapping out things such as ECU, The whole cluster, etc.
Oh and one more thing. Have you tried to perform a battery rest? Just in case a module in the car is having some sort of stroke that won't stop.
I hate having personal car problems, being a former BMW tech I figured I'd try to lend a hand over the handy dandy world wide web. Hopefully you can figure it out. Keep me posted I'm curious as to what the problem is and what you may find further.
