Default 1989 Honda CRX DX on a *College Budget*

Alright, so I have been on the forums both here and crxcommunity for quite a while now, and have gone through just about every build thread possible. I have never actually done one myself though, so I figured it is about time! The main reason I am doing this is to keep track of all the work I do, and for other people to let me know what they think. As you are going through reading this, looking at pictures, and commenting, just keep in mind I am 17 years old and I will be starting college in the Fall so I do not have a ton of money to spend on my car. Right now I am just trying to slowly make it more and more reliable with minor performance upgrades and improve the look ( mostly keep it stock) of both the interior and the exterior.

Some good things when I got the car: It has a carbon fiber hood, even though it is painted. It has an obd1 jdm d15b with a wire tuck just about completed.

Some of the bad when I got it: The interior was shot, every panel painted red, seats were in pretty bad shape, broken windshield, cv shafts were shot,hf transmission was on its way out, wiring problems, motor (still has) a fluctuating idle problem, cheap fake "jdm" mirros, etc, etc..

Some parts I am looking for, for this car:
1ST GEN PRELUDE STEERING WHEEL
BLACK REAR STORAGE BOX
BLACK REAR CARGO DIVIDER
88-89 FRONT LIP

IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE, PLEASE PM ME!

So now on with some pictures...

When I first got the car in the beginning of March 2011:

In my opinion, hideous pink and orange engine bay, but the wire tuck is just about complete...:

Missing some trim and sitting just on steelies:

Everything in the interior was spray painted red, I mean everything!

Here are some of the pictures of the work I started to do right after I got the car.

First i got a CRX centerpiece, that I bought from my brother which he had sitting around.

I then got a new windshield installed(which only lasted about a month before cracking again), more trim starting falling off, after realizing it was hot glued on

I have horrible luck with windshields..

but here is a picture...

A couple of weeks later I found some OEM CRX Floormats sitting the mud at my local junkyard. Got them for an awesome price! After pressure washing them they turned out to be in decent shape other than the letters worn off the two, also found a 1st gen floormat as well the same day!

Soon after, I went back to the junkyard and picked up some stock mirrors to replace the ones on the car.

Then I finally got around to installing my ls webs and yakima bike rack I had from my previous civic. For those wondering the bike rack is not just for looks, it actually gets used.

I also went to the dealer and picked some random maintenance stuff like an oil filter, thermostat, and some gaskets. Also picked up some Lucas anti slip transmission leak repair. Good product but I think the transmission was too far gone, second wouldn't stay in gear, and it leaked really bad out of both axle seals come to find out one of them was in backwards, more on that later..

Took another trip to the junkyard and got the rear speaker brackets and some Infinity speakers for close to nothing :D

After having my hood unlatch and come up on my last civic and crush the windshield, I wanted to make sure this carbon fiber hood wasn't going anywhere so I installed some Aerocatch hood latch's. Awesome product! was just a little nervous cutting the wholes in the hood, but I follwed the directions and it came out good. Then parked next to a sweet mugen edition civic! :D

Here are some more pictures of work I have done on the car to try and get caught up to date!

The next thing I did was replace the seats, I got a set of 88-89 in good condition for an awesome deal! The old original seats were pretty beat up.

Then I pretty much just drove the car for a while without doing to much, thoughts of getting a new transmission, as the old hf would not stay in second gear, but just waiting. Then is started making a grinding noise when the clutch wasn't pushed in, I figured that was the throw out bearing. Lasted about a week as it was and finally, I was driving home and a couple weird noises and no more shifting.. Towed it home that night after work and it sat for a couple of weeks as i was looking for a new transmissions, clutch, and finishing up school.

Ended up getting another hf transmission from the junkyard out of 1988 CRX hf with roughly 160,000 miles, completely stock. They said the motor and trans were grade A, car just had a rotted frame.

Over the next couple of weeks I started collecting parts, as I decided to just pull the motor and do some work on that while it was out.

Here is a list of some of the parts I replaced:

New:
Transmission
Honda Genuine MTF
Exedy Clutch & Flywheel
Both new axles
OEM Axle Seals
OEM 3 layer Y8 headgasket
OEM Waterpump
ARP Headstuds
OEM AC Block off plug
Shift Linkage
Stock Shift Lever and ***

When I pulled the motor out I decided to paint and do a little work on the engine bay, mainly just wanted to get rid of the pink..

Transmission on, arp headstuds, y8 head gasket, new oem water pump

Also refinished the valve cover with a VHT High Temp Wrinkle Paint, turned out a lot better than it was!

Here are some pictures of the work I did on the engine bay, partially shaved both strut towers and painted everything.. Looks much better in my opinion!

Alright, almost caught up.. let me know what you guys think!!

I am out of town this week, but I will try and good some updated pics of the interior. I have replaced everything that was painted red, got rid of the purple shift ****. Once i get back I will be starting my rear disc conversion, I will also post some pics of that.

Brake Upgrades to come:

DA Rear Disc- Pulled off of a car, completely stock at the junkyard with less than 100,000 miles.
91 CRX Si E-brake Cables- Brand New OEM Honda
Reman. Front driver side caliper from Advanced Auto Parts
Hawk HPS Pads for the front
2040 valve from a 90-91 si

I was originally looking for an si trans but could not find one at the time, ended up finding this one at the junkyard with low miles, ended up getting it for half price too, so I cant really complain. I'm gonna be needing to drive the car to school and home at times, it is about a 2 hour drive so the hf trans will be good for that!

Thank you! The trans that was it when i got was an hf and I have been driving with the new one for about a month now so I am used to it. I'm not really trying to build a race car so I don't mind it.

Can anyone tell me what this sensor is and what it is used for?

Could this be what is causing the fluctuating idle?

It has not been plugged in or anything since I have had the car. Wasn't sure if maybe with the obd0 to obd1 it wasn't used, I'm not sure, so if anyone knows anything about it please let me know, Thanks!

I don't have any bad things to say about this motor, it was a little frustrating finding parts for it but once you do your research you should be fine. A lot of the parts I used were for a d16z6 and others were for a d15z1.

I rocked a d15b2 with an hf tranny for years it was the coolest running best MPG car for years, i put the si tran on just because i like a little more go go when im merging traffic with purple heads in florida. mpfi of course. full msd and a 4x1 header helped alot and i got them both for under 100 bucks. favorite DD car till this day.

Wrong, it has nothing to do with that. It's just some old emissions bullsh1t.

..As stated prior, delete it, or leave it be. It's not necisary.

Here is an up to date picture of the center console, no more red! still have to do something about the climate control. I got a ef civic climate control, I would just have to do some wiring, or try to find a crx one that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg to get...

I will try and get some more pictures of the interior, hopefully tomorrow. Also gonna go to the dealer tomorrow and pick up my 91 si e-brake cables for the rear disc swap and should be able to get to work on that!
