should i seafoam a 98 hx d16y5 motor?
jus got a 98 hx motor with 160k on it.... the rear main seal was changed about 2k ago.... and the owner ran full synthetic oil.......
i just want to get some input... should i sea foam the motor ? and is it safe to sea foam a y5 because i know the motor is lean burn and all.... just wondering.. thanks

I seafoamed my built GSR motor awhile back, I put some in the gas tank, some in the oil and then I sucked the rest into the vacuum line at the throttle body and other than smoking like a hippie in a smoke house, BUT the car ran very well afterwards and I noticed a VERY SLIGHT increase in gas mileage but the biggest diffrence that I notice was that the car idled a bit smoother
SOooooo I say seafoam the **** out of it and be happy

Has the engine been well maintained? For example, if you open up the EGR chamber on the intake manifold, is it relatively clean? If so, and considering that the engine has been run with synthetic oil, maybe a Seafoam treatment is not necessary.
Pull the plugs and check for carbon. If it's pretty clean, maybe you don't need it.
You could put some in the gas to clean out the injectors.
If you put it in your oil, don't run the engine hard and change the oil soon after. The Seafoam is very thin and will affect the lubricating properties of the oil. Thin oil means it will run out of bearings faster.

i havent gotten the chance to check the egr valve yet .. the owner said he ran synthetic when he got the car but that was only for about 1 year on syntehtic

thanks for input ... im planning on definitely running it in my gas tank even though im gonna send out my injectors to get serviced... i dont think the plugs will tell me anything because they were recently changed... mayb like 2k miles ago....so they might look pretty new

Since it's a lean burn motor, and I think that stuff might lower the octane rating, you should probably stay off it and just drive a little more conservatively. High load, low octane and lean mix, not a good combination.
I've used Seafoam in my '98 Civic EX, '93 Accord EX, '88 Prelude Si, '00 B18C1 and my '88 CRX HF.
The only "issue" I ever had was the CRX threw a VSS code while I was Seafoaming it. Weird! Threw the code again later, so I'm thinking it could have been chance, but I still don't get why I'm getting that CEL.
