Default What Kind of Brake Fluid Are You Using

Getting ready to re-do my brakes, including stainless lines etc...

As mentioned...what kind of brake fluid are you all using? Any good suggestions?

ATE blue and alternate Gold to easy fluid change. Readily available off the shelf and good temp rating dry and wet. There are charts on HT with temp ratings and ATE is good, not the best. I have not had it fail or boil.

depends on what you are doing with the car, you dont need high temp stuff unless you run track days.

street driving and autox all you need is valvoline synthetic

tracking the car i use pentosin racing fluid.

I use Motul RBF600.

Its cost and properties guided this decision.

This is from an old version on StopTech's site.
Arranged by DRY boiling point:
DRY: 401F -- WET: 284F --- DOT3
DRY: 446F -- WET: 311F --- DOT4
DRY: 502F -- WET: 343F --- Valvoline SynPower
DRY: 509F -- WET: 365F --- Motul 5.1
DRY: 527F -- WET: 302F --- AP Racing 551
DRY: 536F -- WET: 392F --- ATE Superblue/TYP200
DRY: 590F -- WET: 410F --- AP Racing 600
DRY: 590F -- WET: 518F --- Castrol SRF
DRY: 593F -- WET: 420F --- Motul RBF600
DRY: 610F -- WET: 421F --- Neo-Synthetic Super DOT 610

Arranged by WET boiling point:
DRY: 401F -- WET: 284F --- DOT3
DRY: 527F -- WET: 302F --- AP Racing 551
DRY: 446F -- WET: 311F --- DOT4
DRY: 502F -- WET: 343F --- Valvoline SynPower
DRY: 509F -- WET: 365F --- Motul 5.1
DRY: 536F -- WET: 392F --- ATE Superblue/TYP200
DRY: 590F -- WET: 410F --- AP Racing 600
DRY: 593F -- WET: 420F --- Motul RBF600
DRY: 610F -- WET: 421F --- Neo-Synthetic Super DOT 610
DRY: 590F -- WET: 518F --- Castrol SRF

The SRF was the best, but it was absurdly expensive.

"I use Motul RBF600."

What is the cost and can you walk into a vendor and pick it up, or order ahead?

It's about $15/500ml online. A local speed shop may carry it.

Fortunately, I have not overheated ATE. Bang for buck, ATE is about $12-13/L, enough for a flush. I can find it in a few places locally, mostly blue and usually ATE 200. I thought the price break is at ATE in the chart above. Wet point gets decent at ATE also.

I use ATE blue on my car and not had any problems driving on street, canyons, track. The nice thing with the ATE Blue is you can see clearly when you are done flushing it, and it pretty inexepensive. It is also available in a yellowish color for the future change overs. My friend uses it in a race m3 and never had a problem either.

Another note on Valvoline Synpower. The information in the chart is the old, original, formula. A few years ago they changed the look of the bottle and the formula. Dry boiling is 480F and wet 330F, off of the bottle, in my hand. I contacted them to confirm this, again a few years ago, and they had reformulated and confirmed 480 dry and 330 wet. I switched to ATE.

This is what I run as well for Autocross. Change it every off-season because it doesn't work as well when it absorbs moisture. The two tones make it easy to tell when you have all the old fluid out.

For my daily driver I just whatever crap is on sale at the parts store...

Those running Motul, are you flushing every year as well?

I flush every year with Motul.

The chart data that I posted shows that the Motul RBF600, ATE, and AP Racing 600 are all competent fluids for competition use. For daily use, run a DOT 3 or 4 fluid.

Dot 3 and 4 fluids are completely miscible and compatable with your system. Do not run a DOT 5.

JDM ITR 36mm 5 lug conversion, Spoon Calipers, Hawk HP+ pads in the front, OEM Honda Type R pads in the rear. Stainless steel lines front/rear with ATE Blue fluid.. just had it out on the track all day Sunday.. no issues

Check out ImportDPS for good deals and all the sponsors in the marketplace usually have the cheapest prices

DOT5.1 is not the same as DOT5 (silicone based). DOT5 is hydrophobic, so water will phase seperate in the lines and can cause vapor issues. I personally do not like the DOT5.1 designation, as it will lead to someone thinking that DOT5 is OK to use.
