what causes this? i am going to order 2 new pistons anyways. $40 shipped from rock auto

Looks like the seal was dying and stuck to the piston, lower. Cannot tell whether that is on or into the finish. It might polish off, but you are getting new.

Brake fluid attracts moisture. I saw that once where the calipers were off the car and sat a long time. Mine was very surface and polished off without hurting the finish. Probably need to replace. You can clean it and look.
