i've said it before and i'll say it again
Did that piston split Spence?
What engine are you running?
Dont hate your honda... go hug it and tell it that everything is going to be ok.

after a night of staring at it and pondering, i think the chain of events is as follows.
1. ears of dizzy (that go into the cam) broke off the first weekend of testing. couldn't find them. weird.
2. missed a shift at hyperfest 2010 on the start (2-3-2 and still finished the race) but had lots of bent valves and cracked guides. found those dizzy ears when i took the head appart tho. they had been grinding on the cam a little bit and put some metal flake in the oil. ggrreeaatt.
3. got it running after the epic fail season of brake problems only to melt some plugs due to the cam timing being WWAAYY off.
4. it started using oil all of a sudden at a test day a few months back and then picked up a miss before sunday's race at hyperfest. it made it till 2 laps before the checker before it went b00m.
the piston failure is mechanical. had it melted down from detonation, it would have gone for the exhaust side (usually) and it would have put a hole, not a fairly straight 'cut' in the piston. i haven't torn the bottom end completely appart just because i don't care. that one is going to the machine shop for a turbo build the next time it sees the light of day.
sad, i have more wrenching hours in this car than i do drive time. WWAAYY more.

eh. i'm too cheap to have someone build me an engine. hopefully the head can be fixed (that piece of ring didn't get flat all by itself) and i hope to have a new bottom end in a couple weeks.
its a gsr

At least contact him and inquire how he does it.
Nothing wrong with a Spence build.. but man this guy has never had an engine fail on him.
honestly, if i hadn't zinged it, got a bunch of metal in it and almost melted it it would still be running. but you are right. nothing wrong with more info.

from looking at your piston, all I can say is "that's gonna be expensive", and a lot of work, having just done that myself.
Stuck wastegate, unlimited boost, for a short while anyhow, it was amazing while it lasted, boost needle pinned. Broken piston made a fantastic oil pump, spewing the entire contents of the engine onto the track in just two corners. So much time and money.
Why because one guy has really bad luck with motors??
The parts/rebuilt cost isn't much if any different between a H4 motor, and say a H2 motor.
I've done both, D16z6(h4) and k20a3(h2).
Spenc,
I question the fact that you "don't have the money to 'build' a motor", but you've had the money to slap together/buy parts for 4/6 motors.
Spend the money in the right spots, on the right stuff, replace the wear items, upgrade the head studs/valve springs, get a good valve job, and be done with it.
Combined the money you spent on the heads/blocks/cams/etc, and the massive amount of time you've spent pulling/tearing apart/re-buidling 4 times over, don't forget to add in the $$ you 'lost' on not getting to race, wasted gas to and from the track etc. And i don't know how you could not have spent WAY more then $2000, which is more then a build/rebuild will run you.

I totally agree on spending money on the right stuff. That being said I think this is the 1 and only engine Spence has had in the car and he has the BEST head work done on his engine. He will be getting a new block this week and hopefully be back on track soon.
