Default Sh*tty Coils......

So I picked up a set of option racing coilovers (link below) from a kid brand new for 35 bucks. I know they're shitty, but it was better than I had, and they're alot more new so they should be ok right? WRONG. I put them on the front first, set them as low as they'd go and they sit as to be expected, tucking about 1" of tire on a 205/40/17. Then I install the back, also as low as they'd go and they put me at close to stock ride height. The kid said they were for ef/crx so I'd assume they'd fit, but the springs have to be way too long. I don't know if the rears are for a da teg or newer civic, and that's why I'm asking your guys oppinion. Is it just because they're a shitty set up, or possibly for a different car?

Fender to ground measurements are (EF hatch)-

FD- 22 1/4"
RD- 24 1/2"
FP- 22 3/4"
RP- 25"

Oh yeah KYB AGX shocks too.

I think your problem is you have the rear on the front and the front on the rear. Try changing your sleeves around because if you're getting no drop in the rear its cause the stiffer rate for the front is holding it up. Let me know if that solves anything.

Well that may be the problem, but they were labeled, and I did install them as labeled. I also let the stress off the UCA and LCA bushings, and set it down on stands to put them at close to being where they would when on the ground. I had S-Techs on it before, and they were a good 1-2 inches lower than now.

Are the rear cups (on the strut) getting in the way? On mine, I had to cut the cups on my rear struts to get it slammed. Otherwise I had like a 1.5" fenderwell gap (basically stock height).

They may be, I had already planned on modifiying them in the future to get lower anyway, but not until I got a smaller diameter wheel/tire set up. And as far as the springs being flipped around, if that were the case don't you think the front would be STUPID low? because the drop now is what I'd expect from the set up it's at. I don't know, I guess this is what comes from shitty parts. It's kind of funny that these are more expensive than the megan sleeves though haha. I'd always saw megan as the "almost high end but still kind of knock off quality"

yeah just look at the sleeve. If you still have tons of room on the sleeve but you can't lower the perches cause the strut cup prohibits it, then you have to cut the strut cups. Common problem when lowering CRX's on anything other than ground controls.

You need to extend your top hats.

Read here:https://honda-tech.com/forums/suspension-brakes-54/pic-request-diy-extended-top-hats-1864638/

You can also find them on ebay. If you plan on slamming your car, you should do this.

extending the top hats makes no difference in ride height - just ride quality and uptravel.

Not to mention increasing the life of the suspension which the OP is compromising when just dropping the ride height down. It is give and take. I have customers coming to me with their Koni Yellows that they had installed 6 months previously leaking...They'd slam the car down, without any regard to the the strut/shock travel. So if you are going to lower your ride, do it right, unless you like to replace your struts often..

So yes, cut the strut cups down, but not off. Then adjust your ride height. Then extend your top hats, and enjoy a ride a bit more civilized...

Top hats are on their way. I had already planed on top hats before any of this happened, because of the said reasons. Seeing as I'd rather cut up my 35 dollar coils than my shocks that were 3 times as much, I'm going to take the coilover perch out and cut the spring to sit in the shock perch as a normal spring would. Eyeing it looks like if I take about 1" off the bottom coil will result in the spring having the same coil seat as the springs I took off. If they aren't the desired height I want, I'll take more off. If they ride like ****, I'll just throw them away haha. I've had experiences with cut coils, and these seem to be plenty stiff to have some taken off without too much negative impact, and have little to no progressive rate from what I can see. The spring with both collars on the perch is maybe an inch if that from the factory spring seat, so even cutting the coilover perch will only do me about that good (maybe an inch). Like I said I'm damn near 2 inches from even getting even with the fender and tire.

Problem with those generic coilovers is the fact that the springs are all the same rate. So the rears are going to be stiff, which sucks. You may want to run the rears with just the spring and not use the sleeve.

As to the front strut - I would suggest you run the 88-89 accord fronts. They are 1 1/2" shorter and fit our knuckles perfectly. So you can drop the front nicely and still have more than an 1 inch travel on stock top hats.

If you completely read my last post you'd see that that's exactly what I'm doing lol. and as for the front, its plenty low for now, and once I get my new wheel/tire set up I'll probably only need another half an inch which I'll get by taking an adjustment collar off or taking the sleeve out. as for the rears, I'll probably end up taking 1-2 full coils off to get the desired height. And thanks for the info on the shorter struts, that's same trick we run on one of my 5 other cars I've got lol (06 scion xb running echo struts) I'm used to having stiff suspension since I've been running it for years now with multiple other cars and I've grown so accustomed to it that I actually prefer the ride over a soft set up. My old 240sx had buddy club race specs with different eibach springs with some redardedly high spring rate that had 0 movement what so ever. My suspension consisted of how much side wall I had on my tires haha and I loved it.

I too have ebay/cheapo coil sleeves or whathaveyou. The fronts go way down, but I've cut probably nearly 4 coils off the rears. I don't notice and issues with the spring becoming softer. Put your top hats on and you'll be good to go!

Oh they're gonna be gone here PDQ. Never wanted them in the first place but it was either 17's or cinder blocks so I chose the more sensible option. Looking to get a set of mini cooper phone dials or "holies", whichever you prefer, this weekend.

How low are you with that many coils cut? And how badly did they seat lol. I'm thinking about cutting them more than planned and then use the sleeve so I can still adjust them.

Ended up cutting around 3 coils off the back with the perches on, but all the way down. Half an inch from tucking rim on the driver side and about an inch from tucking rim on pass side lol. I'll fine tune it when I haven't been working on it for two nights straight for 4 hours each night haha

I cut the top part of the spring so it sits in the top hat with no movement. I left the bottom flat and put the sleeve in so there was no movement of the spring. I've done this before on my xb and put a ton of miles on it and the way the spring set was way more janky than this is. I've got 5k+ miles on my box with 4 coils cut on the lowest springs on the market for those lol. Took it to Florida from IL this way and haven't had a problem.
