Default Alternator or battery?

I tried a compression start on my car and it didnt work. Decided to jump start it worked! waited a few minutes right when i turned on the headlights my car shut off and wont start back up again. Is it the alternator? or battery? My friend suggested it was the alternator. Before this happened i replaced my radio. Right when i drove off my rpms would drop when i hit the gas pedal but then jump back up and drive normally but as soon as i let go it lurches. Hints? suggestions?

First test the battery. Many auto parts stores will do this for you.
