Default Honda Civic '99 SI Canadian (U.S. EX model) Transmission issue

Hi guys,

I just registered and new to the forums. I have been following this forums for a while now since I bought my used civic few months ago. This place is a library full of knowledge. I am not quite there yet with my knowledge about cars and consider myself to be beginner level enthusiast. Anyway, I wanted to ask a few questions about my civic. Before you guys tell me to use the search button, I did use it but a lot of it did not pertain to my questions.

My civic is a 1999 Civic SI canadian model, which is the same as a 1999 Civic EX in the U.S. It is automatic, and has a d16y8 engine. I was lucky enough to find one with only 107,000kms on it so I got it. It's all stock except I tinted the windows, put a small powered sub and a jvc deck.

My questions:

From what I have read in these forums, the D series engines have a crappy tranny. From my own experience driving my car, I am dissapointed in how the civic automatic tranny performs. The gear changes from 1st to 2nd(4000rpm), 2nd to 3rd(3500rpm), 3rd to 4th(good range rpm) all come in high rpm ranges. Is that a norm for this car? The engine is giving the power, but the gear changes are not happening accordingly. I have done a transmission fluid flush and it didn't improve much. So what would you guys recommend me do? I have read a few places to change the final drive to see a big improvement in perfomance. Which final drive should be looking at getting? Also I want to change the intake for the car and get a skunk2 or an aem sri, but not sure if it would help with my problem. I do want my car to go a bit faster for my own driving pleasures.

Anyway sorry for the long post. any help appreciated

No one makes aftermarket final drives for Honda automatics. If you're planning to keep the automatic in it don't expect much in the way of performance, it is what it is.
