Camshaft Question
Hey guys, i have a friend that has a skunk2 tuner stage 1 intake camshaft. He cant find the exhaust cam, but he wants to sell me the intake cam for $40. If i was to buy this intake cam and team it up with a ctr/itr exhaust, would this be a better combination than a stock gsr cam setup. the head is a usdm obd1 gsr head.
I think you could probably get more power out of the tuner stage 1 + ITR but camshafts really work as a system so I'm not sure what your results would be. If you do that, make sure you get the timing correct.
i would imagine that its better then using the stage 1 intake and stock sgsr exhaust cam. The skunk intake cam improves air flow while the exhaust flow is still the same. To see a benefit, you might as well increase the exhaust flow as well. Someone else will have to chime in about lift durations with the stage1+itr combo. My comment is just what i understand in theory from the research ive done here.
Ill say this much for sure. From what i have read u definately want to improve exhaust flow if u are improving intake to see full potential.

Everything's been done at least once before. I recommend that you ask in the all-motor forum. It's possible someone there has done it/heard of it done before.
My guess is it would be OK. I don't think you'll run into VtoV issues on such mild cams and I'd guess it's better flowing than ITR-I/ITR-E, although not as good as if you had a full set of SK2.
$40 for SK2 cams is a good deal so it might be worth checking into more.

If you dont want it i'll take it.... probably. ^_^
$40... people sometimes just use the itr intake cam and the stage 1 cant be that much different then the itr. The point though is that you do want to improve exhaust flow so do what he said, post in the all motor or just ask a mod to move this one.
Im actually in the market for a set of itr cams, originally just the intake but its not easy to find a sale for just that and ill be adding other bolt on's so ill just buy a set.

I would honestly pass on it and recommend that you do some research on mods, especially cams.
It seems most people these days just want to buy some parts and throw them at their motor and then complain and get annoyed when it turns out horribly.
Why do you want/need cams?
What other supporting mods do you have to justify them?
Do you have an EMS?
Would you tune the car?
Ask yourself some of those questions first.
When it comes to cams it is important to make sure you really need them, instead of just buying them and wishing they will make power. Even the smallest of cams require tuning and valvetrain upgrades to make them worth their while.
Good luck!

Thanks for assuming that im dumb and dont know what cams do or need!

Lol! That was the new york in me coming out!
Anywayz, I have pr3 pistons, skunk2 intake manifold, bbk throttle body, gsr head, and thas about it. skunk2 TUNER stage 1's dont require upgraded valve train, they're a slight bit more agressive than itr's and ctr's and people get away with that without upgraded valvetrain all the time, plus skunk2 says on their website you dont need it.
Question for you!! Who wouldn't tune their car after dumping diff pistons and different camshafts in it! no only that, its an lsvtec, dont know of any stock ecu's that run an lsvtec map!!! so that's answering you question with a question.
Now if you're telling me dont waste my time or money on just the intake cams cuz its not a good idea to use the stage 1's with a set of ctr exhaust, than ok!

Pr3 pistons are nothing crazy and I just think the cost involved with a set of Stage 1 cams is a waste. On average they will net you less than 8 hp through the power band.
And to answer your question about tuning, you should look around here more. TONS of threads about people doing exactly that. Plenty of threads about built motors and stock ECU's and "why won't they run".
Pass on this mis-matched situation, nothing really big to gain here. Save up and do it right.
