my car swerves on the road when i hit bumps and it shakes on the highway could this be the reason? and what is this part called? its on a 94 hatch btw.

Stop driving the car. It's unsafe to drive. Have it towed to a shop for repair. As for cost, call shops for estimates. Tell them that the rack end/inner tie rod has snapped.

 

Had one go out on my coupe, called around the salvage yards, got one for $75 and the inner tie rods are like $25 a piece

 

That looks bad , dont drive it. dont forget to get an alignment afterwords.GL.

Wow, that's the worst broken tie rod end I've seen. Do you do the regular maintanence on your car or does a shop? How come that wasn't caught along time ago if inspections were done.

To inspect them in the future, when you lift the front end, put your hands at 12 and 6 oclock, and push on the top and pull on the bottom a couple times, take noice of any clunks or looseness.

Then put your hands at 6 and 3 oclock, shake tire back and forth, take note of any looseness.

-If there's the same amount of movement in both top to bottom and side to side, you have a bad wheel bearing
-If you only have movement top to bottom, then suspect a ball joint
-If you only have movement side to side, then start looking at inner and outter tie rod ends.
