I believe all forward gears are synchronized and have helical gears, while the reverse gear is not synchronized and is non-helical. This causes a different gear sound when in reverse, and is why car should be at a stop when when shifting into reverse. If your problem is more serious than that, and it is something you can not live with it you will need to take it to be fixed. You do not want to mess with the transmission if you do not know what you are doing.

this is a automatic transmission an even when the car is not in motion it still makes the grinding sound some times when u put it in revers. it just like the manual trans when u shift with out pressing the clutch . iam not trying to fix it my self i just need to know if its better to have it fix or get a used one being that the car is a 92.

thanks
