Default quick intake question

Hey guys

My car has been making a terrible noise for months now because of a bad catalytic converter and, since I'm going to get it fixed tomorrow, I'm tempted to install a cold air intake to make it sound even better than before (sort of a gift to myself).

Complete kits are quite expensive so I was wondering if a cheap kit coupled with an universal K&N filter would be an option to consider (I read cheap filters shouldn't be trusted)

cheap kit. As you can see it is 3"

K&N RU-5176 (3")

What do you think ?

Thanks a lot :D

That's the way to go. Cheap 3" tubing setup and then buy a good quality filter for it.

The usual Accord replacement filter I have used is;
3" inside diameter at the flange
1.5" - 2" flange height
6" Base diameter
5.5' - 6" Height
4.75" - 5" outside diameter at the top.

Cool

There's about a billion different sizes however

I guess I need to know which one comes with the complete K&N kit

Can you expand on that a little ? I'll be honest the only source I have to hear the difference is youtube. I never heard a before after comparison in "real life".

Do you think it's not worth it because it's too expensive for what it is or do you think it's not worth it to do this on a 10 year old car ?

I really love my Accord and wish it sounded a bit better.

I buy products for extra performance not noise, which is all you get with an intake is a bunch of extra noise and no real performance gains.

I understand and my goal is not to rice it up but I would just like a better sound. I don't expect my F23 to be fast all of a sudden... trust me I know it's impossible

Where is your proof that there are no gains in adding one of these. There are always going to be gains when one removes a restrictive OEM shyte box air filter and corrugated tubing. Are you going to gain 20-30whp, of course not. However you will free up some and I agree it sounds F#@king sweet.

IMO the sound of a properly tuned engine and intake will beat the sound of any resonator & muffler combo. I'm not saying that the above video is properly tuned. However I like that sound. I like the sound being more up front than I care for it farting out the back. It's easy to create noise when you start with an explosion. It's harder to get a nice tone out of an intake.

Oh, forgot to mention that a good open/tuned style intake will also enhance your exhaust sound as well.

What about other restrictions in the intake system?

Throttle body size
Intake runners
Port size
Valve size
Valve lift
Valve duration

Until someone proves to me overall that a cheap intake is better than a stock intake on a stock application, I’m not buying.

I guess if he paints his valve cover silver and buys Magnecor wires he should be OK

I'd listen to Ghost as he knows his ****. Not picking on nobody here but TB, Runners, Port Size, etc all matters as well. You will see a decent gain by porting and running bigger TB. But this thread is about the OP's intake system. Lets not get off topic here.

That's cool and all but to be honest I'm a little lost.
In a perfect world I would find a whole kit (minus the filter) that is cheap and would include all the necessary bits to be installed (man I feel like such a noob as I type this)

I can pay back with computer related advice if you want, haha

Ebay is usually your friend for cheap CAI tubing kits, however they will come with the cheap filter. Any local crappy tire can get you the K&N air filter or equivalent.

It will probably run you between $75-$100 for a tube kit & filter. Prices are going up, probably because more young people are getting their hands on Accords and wanting this stuff. I can remember when a 3"CAI with a crappy filter was $30-40 shipped.

Actually if he painted it white and went COP he would probably be better

Oh and buy the way, that silver is OEM for that engine. The wires were half price in a going out of business sale. Same resistance as OEM. No Hp gains though

Personally I would use the generic piping with an AEM filter intead of K+N

Dryflow (NO OILING!!!) > oiling filters

Just the way I see it.. My AEM filter has stood up strong for 4 years so far and I really can't complain.. I just wash it once every 15,000 miles or so
