Default Is it enough? What to do?

Well I am 16 and purchased a 1990 Honda Civic DX (Auto) which needed a new Engine for 300. I can Afford the new engine [$300 , 125k d15b2]. This is suppose to be a very slow engine, how bad is it?

My girlfriend really wanted the car (as it came from her family) and I've been thinking of selling it to her mom, and I wanted to get either a Honda Prelude or Integra though there out of my range. I saw a 1988 Iroc forsale that needs an engine and was looking at that as well. I know this is a honda forum but with the Iroc's resell value I think it would be a better choice.

What do you think? How much would a decent engine cost me?
