So my speedo was not reading at all, it was just at a consant 20mph. I got the code for the vss and replaced it. It does not stay at 20mph now but flutters. When I took the old vss out, i noticed the fluid was barely on the gear that spins. Does this mean my fluid is low and causing it to act up? If so how high up on the vss should the fluid be? I figure it should be above the gear but I dont really know. I noticed on the vss is a pin a little higher up, is that important?

 

The fluid level is probably fine. It is checked at a plug on the passenger side of the transmission.

Is 7.5A dash fuse 15 blown?

 

No fuse is good. I checked all the continuity of the harness before i ended up switching out the vss. If I disconnect the vss the speedometer reads zero so im assuming this means that its not my cluster. The code that I got was for the vss as well so I replaced it and the cel has not come back on yet the needle flutters. Do you know how high the fluid level is supposed to be on the vss just so I can compare? I dont really understand how the vss works but I assume it needs mtf to spin?

 

fluid level has nothing to do with the VSS, it's drive off a plastic gear pressed on the diff. You most likely have a bad connection between the VSS and the cluster, normally the connector that plugs into the VSS gets corroded.

 

Check the ground wire, power wire, and signal wire in the VSS plug with a multimeter.

 

what am i checking for though between the 3 wires with the multimeter? I checked for continuity and everything was good but I didnt know what voltage or anything each wire has. I did figure out the ground wire by testing with the car off and on. The ground I know is good. I did clean the connector before putting the new one in.

 

The ground wire should have continuity with body ground

The power wire should have battery voltage (~12.5V) to body ground or to the VSS ground wire.

The signal wire should not have a short (continuity to body ground) or an open (no continuity to the speedo or ECU).

 

So I tried to check the wires again and I noticed when I had the vss unplugged the speedometer was not reading 0 but it was at 20mph. Does this mean that the cluster is now bad? Is there a way to test the cluster besides getting one to try
