Default Car bogs at 5k rpm! help please!!

Maybe you guys can help me out. Car is a 99 ek with jdm gsr. Car is running on a obd1 ecu, sticker has been scraped off so i have no idea what type it is. Car idles at 1.6k rpm with this ecu when warm and pulls hard when it wants to work.

Previous owner of the car stated this ecu had been tuned for a built gsr motor. Right now the car has a stock jdm gsr with bolt ons. It will pull hard for a couple runs passing 8k rpms but After driving the car for some time it wont go past 5k rpm and feels like the fuel is cutting off (as if I'm hitting the rev limiter).

If i unplug the ecu and let it reset itself the car will go back to normal and allow some good runs but then the problem will eventually occur again. Seems as though the ecu is logging some bad data and needs to be resetted to run correctly.

I also bought a stock obd2a jdm gsr ecu with an obd2b to obd2a jumper harness. The car idles at 2k rpm with this ecu but has significantly less power than the obd1 ecu. The bogging problem also happens at 5k rpm with this ecu, but i can go past 5k rpm all the way to redline.

Any ideas on how i can fix this problem? Do you think a simple retune can make it work properly? I am new to hondas and any help is appreciated.

Ok thanks fellas. Obviously the car is obd2b but im wondering if there is anyway to keep the car scanable with an obd scanner and get rid of the CEL. I need to pass emissions and i cant have a cel from te jumper harness. Any ideas?

You will probably NOT pass with a jumper harness either.

Hey guys i am new here (noob) and am having a similiar problem with a stock 2000 civic si i just recently purchased. The car runs strong when it has been sitting a good while but after warming up a bit the car is slow to accelerate and when i go up hills it feels like the car struggles a bit then kicks it around 3000 rpm. There is times when i am on flat surface and push the gas in a little and the car does nothing, takes a while to got going and gives me the same problem as described going up hills. Sorry about the long post, just my first car and any idea to help me pinpoint the problem would greatly be appreciated!

Ye i think my clutch is the problem. I noticed it happens the more i shift gears, the engine is at normal working temperature before the car shows me these symptoms. However, i took my car to crest honda and the tech there said it feels more like my timing is off and recommended a belt change, i asked if he could visually check my clutch to see signs of wearing and he stated that it takes a lot of work to check this specific model and would charge me. I declined but my question is, can the timing belt be at fault if the car only does it after a bit of driving? And the car has 164,000 miles and has not had a belt change but it looks pretty good condition.

you can't inspect a clutch without removing the transmission (i think this has nothing to do with your problem though). but i would at the very least do the timing belt considering your mileage (that is a disaster waiting to happen). also a tune up would be in order. cap/rotor/plugs. bet your plugs are gone.

Ye i dont know what the problem is then and am really losing hope. I am currently saving up for a belt change might get it by the end of next week, will let you know if the problem persists after. The only other things i know of that could be the issue are the fuel pump,filter, clutch, or the engine itself is mechanically messed up like this. I am changing the fuel filter tomorrow doubt its my problem. And i changed out the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and bought a whole new distributor unit for the car after purchase so i know my plugs are ok. I am really at a loss and know one can quite steer me in the right direction for a solution. Thanks for your help, again i will let you know the results after the belt change. Fingers crossed.....

Ok so i havnt changed the belt yet because the lack of money, however, i took my car in for a check up at an import auto shop near my house and the mechanic stated that everything is fine except he checked the clutch and its a little worn and my timing was off. He adjusted my belt and now the car is running VERY strong compared to earlier. He only charged me 71$ which i am surprised at, said he would change my belt for 495$ and clutch is 1006$. I am just happy to know i found the problem and will clear it up soon. Thanks for your help!

*Put the handbrake on.
* Turn the engine on.
* Depress the clutch pedal and put the transmission in fourth gear.
* Slowly let up on the clutch while stepping on the gas pedal.
* If you are able to completely release the clutch pedal without the engine stalling (or the car moving), your clutch is history.
