does taking off the intake box make any difference to the car?
I"m guessing he saying to pop the lid off the existing box maybe?
If thats what OP means, It'll make more noise, suck in more heat, and be less effective.

The car gets much slower with the lid off. I've experienced this. I've also done an experiment with a friend's car. Definitely significantly slower with the lid off.

Not harmful, just not ideal to make/keep power, heat soak is a kick in the *****, if you want to keep the sound and power try K&N's ram intake with heatshield(I cant remember the specific name) good luck-Justin
BTW it's a K&N FIPK.
when i had mine i added an intake snorkel to the stock box and sealed off the lil resonator chamber in the airbox itself. finished off with a spoon filter and i remember it being very peppy and great sounding on the freeway
