I"m guessing he saying to pop the lid off the existing box maybe?

If thats what OP means, It'll make more noise, suck in more heat, and be less effective.

The car gets much slower with the lid off. I've experienced this. I've also done an experiment with a friend's car. Definitely significantly slower with the lid off.

That basically sums it up.

I took mine off, gave it a couple small revs just to see how it would sound, the put it back on knowing that it would be stupid. Then I bought an FIPK

It will make the intake noise under the hood louder.

I don't believe that there is 100% evidence that it's harmful for the vehicle, but most advise against removing the lid.

Not harmful, just not ideal to make/keep power, heat soak is a kick in the *****, if you want to keep the sound and power try K&N's ram intake with heatshield(I cant remember the specific name) good luck-Justin

Agreed. It won't be harmful, just not ideal for power; especially from a stop.

BTW it's a K&N FIPK.

when i had mine i added an intake snorkel to the stock box and sealed off the lil resonator chamber in the airbox itself. finished off with a spoon filter and i remember it being very peppy and great sounding on the freeway
