Default Popping/clunking noise

Hello

I have a 2002 Honda accord 4cyl, auto transmission. There is a popping/clunking noise coming from the front of vehicle when it is driven. I've replaced the cv axles several times over the past couple of years, the noise will go a way, but in a short time it comes back. And it is sporatic, doesn't happen everytime I drive it. I was told that it could be the transmission bearing or the cone that the shafts sits in, inside the transmission. Any thoughts?

And I would like to add that I just had the vehicle in the body shop and they told me that the axle is loose where it goes into the transmission. And I just replaced these cv axles two weeks ago.

Thank you to all that responded. I ended up taking this to my dad's mechanic. It is the differencial that is bad. Apparently when Honda put this rebuilt tranny in the car, the tranny wasn't put to gether properly and the differencial is just "floating" inside the tranny. So now the fight begins with Honda to get the tranny fixed. It only has 38k miles on it!

If the bearing is fine, and the spacers were installed, it could be that whomever rebuilt the transmission forgot the shim or shimmed it incorrectly.

1. DIFFERENTIAL
2. GEAR, FINAL DRIVEN
3. SPACER (41X80X1)
4. SPACER (41X76.2X1)
5. SHIM (this varies in thickness from 2.05-3.05 in .025MM increments)
6. BOLT, FLANGE (10MM)
7. BEARING, SPECIAL TAPER (40X76.2X16)
8. BEARING, SPECIAL TAPER (40X80X18.75)

The mechanic didn't want to tear the tranny apart to go any further, however, the tranny was rebuilt and installed by Honda, so what ever they didn't do correctly is what is causing the problem.
