A different kind of beast
Hey everyone,
I'm new to this thread and i have owned one honda in my life, a '95 civic pretty much bone stock with a body kit and CF hood, nothing special. But i have new intrest in getting a CRX. I'm looking to build a car to achive at least 60-70 MPG (hopefully more) for under $7,000.00. Heres my plan, please read through the whole thing and tell me what you think.
1) buy a CRX and GUT IT, completely except for the driver and passenger seat, i also want to leave the heat, AC, radio but only the front two speakers.
2) Rebuld the motor - new head gasket, timing belt, full tune up, K&N air filter and the "tornador" (im also thinking of maybe a header and intake but I'm not sure how much that will help me with economy, or maybe even a cam designed for straight fuel economy and zero power, i dont care about speed)
3) Taller tires to give it the effect of gearing it and also a thinner tread width to keep down the static friction against the road
4) Build my own goofy body kit with absolutly no vents, ridges or creases and any other thing that will add drag. I'm also going to install covers over the wheels to keep my wheel wells from acting like little parachutes.
5) smash out all of my windows and replace with lexan, also thinking about cutting out the majority of the roof and replacing that with a big sheet of tinted lexan, that'd be pretty cool and also save like 50LBS.
6) im thinking about doing a hydrogen kit. I've read that they only add maybe 5MPGS or so BUT water is practically free! so even if i ran a mixture of 75% gas 25% H2O that would be reducing my cost per gallon by 25% and the whole point of this build would be to get the cheapest MPG i can.
7) gears - I looked into getting a 6 speed trans but that seems practially impossible so im wondering if anyone has a 5 speed setup with really low gears or if they sell a final diff set. I'd like to be cruzing at 70mph around 1,200 RPMS.
So let me know what you guys think! Does this sound possible? has anyone tried this? is one year CRX lighter or known for better MPG's? anything will help. If i get 70 MPG's that will certainly make this car a beast, just a little different then the kind of beast I'm used to.
I saw a mid 90's civic getting 75MPG's with just a body kit but it looked like total ***. I moved from jersey to NC so I'm trying to build something for just the trips back and forth, this will not be used around town.

easier than all that get a d15z1 out of a 92-95 vx also use that stock ecu for the d15z1, get a crx hf transmission, make sure all suspension(bushing, struts, etc) get it aligned and drive like a normal person you should be in the 55mpg to 60 mpg go to ecomodder.com research stuff there you should learn alot

Check this out 118mpg CRX HF. Hope this helps.

70 mph at 1200 rpms? maybe with a diesel... do you realize you be making probably 35 ft pounds of torque with a d series at those rpms....this has to be a prank post.
Put a d15z1/hf trans in a first gen insight. 60 mpg highway for sure.

yes, 70 MPH @1200 rpms. I dont care about throttle response, i go in a straight line with no hills for 5 hours. as long as it doesn't stall, thats all i care about. I haven't had a honda in a few years but i think it idled around 800-1000 RPM so 1200 should be able to keep it running.
