Hey everyone. Already searched and didn't really find an answer. My car seems to squeal very loudly in motion. It seems to be coming from the rear but not too sure. The squealing stops when I brake. Squealing happens at somewhat low speeds. Anyone had this problem before? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

 

Could be a seizing brake. Does the squaling wheel heat up after a long drive? Check the sliding pin to see if it's seized and consider replacing the brake line to that wheel.

If the mud guard gets bent so that it is rubbing against the rotor it can also make a terrible noise.

Another thing to check your pad thickness because the wear indicator can make a lot of noise if the pads are badly worn, although usually when you're braking and not when coasting.

 

Hey thanks for the input. I have no mud guards so it can't be that. I'll see if the wheel heats up after a long drive. I haven't been aware of a heated wheel. I'll check the brakes.

 

The guards I'm talking about are sheet metal shields on the inside of the rear hub. There is one on the top that stops mud from getting into the parking brake cable and a couple on the bottom that protect the vehicle speed sensor. You've definitely got those (or you should!).

Sorry, I misunderstood you. I do have the splash shield. The sound is coming from the rear passenger wheel. If I spin the wheel with the splash shield on, it's a lot louder. But when I take it off and spin the wheel, the sound is still there but just not as loud. It doesn't seem to be bent or rubbing on anything.

 

If you can hear it when you turn the wheel by hand then it's something metal rubbing against the rotor. Seized pads will make a scraping, not a squaling sound at low wheel speeds and will make the wheel noticeably harder to rotate by hand.

Do a really thorough visual inspection and you should find it. Otherwise, check the pads to see if the wear indicator is exposed and rubbing on the rotor. Also look for scoring on the rotor.

 

It does sound more like a harsh scraping sound than a squealing. It only seems to be making that noise on a certain part of the rotor when rotating it.

 

Figured out where the noise came from. The brake pad on the rear passenger side is very unevenly worn out. One side of the pad is down to the plate, while the other side still has a good chunk of "meat" left. It's the inner one that is unevenly worn. The outer one is normal.

Could this be because of warped rotors?
