Default WA State: State Patrol Losing its Auto Theft Unit

Posted in the GDD forum also. Wanted to make sure everyone is aware of what's going on with our state.

Last week it was reported that car theft was up 10% year over year and now the WA state patrol is dissolving their auto theft unit due to budget cuts. They will no longer investigate stolen cars, chop shops or etc because it's a property crime, not a personal crime.

All thirteen detectives are being re-assigned to other positions statewide.

Only option left is get a super secure safe spot with the best security ever or.... get a car that is nearly impossible to steal lol.

learned my lesson with my hatch

Got to remember this is only for WSP. Sheriffs and city police still handle auto thefts in their jurisdictions.

Agreed but now all of the work those 13 detectives were doing gets pushed down. And it's safe to some they are already overworked and there isn't budget to make up for these detectives.

Meh, I have no faith in them. I lived two blocks away from the SnoCo Sheriff's Dept. when my Toyota 4x4 was stolen. The call never went out (I was listening to my scanner) and it took them over an hour and a half to show up and take the report.

'Calls' don’t always go out; it gets sent to a MDC (mobile dispatch computer). ‘Calls’ are also prioritized, and auto theft is pretty low on that list.

Exactly. I get it, I know how it goes, but I'm still a bit irked. What makes it worse is that I actually heard my truck being stolen. They left my apartment complex and headed up the hill towards I-5. As unlikely as it may be, I lie to myself and say they could have intercepted it had they responded sooner. But, as you mentioned, they really don't care about stolen vehicles. If they happen to stumble across it, they'll notify you. That's about it.

This was clear back in 2002, though. The truck never returned. Two other people that I know of had their Toyotas stolen right around the same time, and they both got theirs back. No such luck for me. I'm sure it was someone who knew the previous owner. They were shady *****, and those Toyotas are extremely easy to steal. Eventually I just gave up hope and quit placing it on the stolen vehicle list. I still keep track of the ownership, though, just in case someone ends up with it and somehow transfers the title.

I had to keep filling out paperwork to keep it on the stolen vehicle list, and to maintain current contact information. (so they told me)

I gave up on it years ago.

I know a dispatcher for the Snoho County Sheriff's. If someone car is ever stolen, let me know and I'll txt my friend and tell her she needs to dispatch it! My alarm went off the other night at about 11:30 then a loud *** cheap muffler car takes off(not sure if it was where my car was but definitely sounded close) and the previous day some dude at Jack in The Box telling me how bad *** my hatch was and asking me **** about it, offering me 6k for it. We have security roll through our parking lot right passed my car(they drove passed about 5 minutes after my alarm went off) so I txted my friend to ask her opinion if I should call and have an officer drive around my complex a couple times to scare off anyone that may be scouting the place. She said I didn't even need to call and that she would send a dispatch to the closest officer to target that area a couple of times on his shift. I went outside about 10 minutes later and saw a cruiser go past.
So long story short, let me know when something happens if your in Snoho County!

The sad part: Spokane is #4 in auto thefts in the Country, Yakima is #10. The other 8 of the top ten are in California.

One of my friend's stock exhaust got stolen off his 86 Honda Civic last week, they like unbolted it with the cat. Its like who the F steals a stock exhaust off a 86 Civic. There are plenty of those things on CL and junkyards. Also my cousins tow hitch got stolen off his Dodge yesterday while we had it parked by the docks in Edmonds. People have no shame at all.

At Edmonds beach by the dog park my old roommate parked his 06 5 series and walked down to the beach. No sooner was the car out of sight when his alarm went off and he ran up there thinking some one door dinged him.

Turns out some one threw a brick threw the window in broad daylight and stole his GPS and V1 radar detector............of course insurance wont do any thing because they are not permanently attached to the car.

Some people are such low lifes.

Yakima would be higher on the list if the population was larger.
