Default How to remove this rust?

Its been on for a long time, not the rotor but the hat between the rim and rotor.

I dont want to use rust remover in case it gets on the rotor or else where and dont wanna have to go through the hassle taping stuff off. i was told to get it sandblasted.

Also I plan on painting my caliper - just cleaned it, was only able to find the spray high heat paint but want to apply it with a brush instead.

Sandpaper, steelwool, something on the end of a drill to remove the rust. There are flapper disks of sandpaper of various sizes and grits that work in grinders and porting tools, and drills. You can spray a small amount of the high temp paint into a container and brush on. It works, did it a few years ago.

Thanks, sounds like a whole lot of elbow grease is needed eh? So you painted on top and it doesnt rust after?

Ive seen the high heat paint but it only comes in spray here, you mean you can spray that in a container and brush it on with a brush? I thought that doesnt work? I thought if you spray it into a container it just sticks to that?

If you spray into a small container you get some liquid, not much surface. It will gas off and dry in the container, but plenty of time to paint the small area. You will lose a little on the container sides, but spray enough for the next wheel and move on. What I used set up better with heat, or heated for a while. You can heat an outdoor grill to 200 or more and heat the rotors after you paint the area. Some of the high temp paints note that they harden and are more chip and scuff resistant if heat hardened. I mentioned the drill with flap sander, saves work. You may find some in paint or hardware sections, or small ones to use with grinding tools.

Do i need rust removing spray too with the wire brush? My rear drums are rusted to hell and was told its gonna be a pain in the *** just wire brushing them. If its gonna take hours to get them off id rather just go buy new unpainted drums for $40 each and save me the hassle of all the elbow grease.

Wire brush on a tool, drill or pnuematic drill if you have it is fairly quick. If pitted and deep, it is more difficult, and the surface not as good to paint. I did mine, but Oregon and no salt or deep rust. You can try a motorized brush and you will know very shortly.

glass bead blast will take it all our, brushing only gets a portion and corrosion will resurface after painting
