Icon3 98 Honda Civic Ex Check Engine Light on!!

Okay, so obviously, I have a 98 honda civic ex Automatic.
I bought it not too long ago and the guy I bought it from had it stolen before. It had no air intake or sensor. So I bought a cheap ebay one [cuz I'm super broke right now I don't have enough for an AEM one haha] and I installed it. [ http://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqN,!jcE2HIWLGlHBNm041ms6Q~~0_12.JPG ] <--that's it right there. Okay so I noticed that this one --> http://kandn.com/images/l/69-6000TR.jpg has the MAF sensor (Mass airflow sensor) and mine does not.
Ever since I bought the car the check engine light is on and it still won't turn off even after I installed the intake. My dad has scanned it for the codes, but nothing will come up yet the light is still on! :O
He's even tried to erase the code but it won't budge.
The car takes off very slowly. I nearly have to step on the gas the whole way down for it to gain some speed on take off and sometimes when I stop at a red light or a stop sign, the car's rpm's will go up and down almost all the way down making the car feel like it want to turn off.
I really don;t know what the problem could be?! Could it be because it's missing the MAF sensor completely???
HELP!!!
xx

It's actually an Intake Air Temp sensor not a MAF (the intake in the second link is not for a 96-00 Civic). They aren't too expensive iirc, and they don't go bad too often. So if you can't find one at a local junkyard, most chain auto part store sell them.

You can drill a hole in the intake tube and mount it yourself.

Any more info about why you can't get a CEL code from the reader? That info would help you a lot as far as it running so poorly.

i actually don't know why the scanner won't bring up the codes.
Anyways, could this missing piece be causing the car to lose power and run rough??
