Default Lack of power when cold

I've got an '87 Accord with a carb engine (rebuilt 30k ago-the carb). Sometimes, only when it's cold outside (Lower than 50), the car will slowly loose power and eventually go down and stall out. Then once I recrank it, it starts right up and runs fine. Never happens if it's warmer out. Happened maybe six times last winter and one or two the year before that( at highway speeds too, not stop and go). What do you think this points too? No matter how much I push on the peddle when this is happening, there is zero power, zilch. I'm not sure where to start, so thanks for any pointers.

That's a pretty good description of a bad hot air door diaphram or a disconnected hot air hose. Pull the vacuum line off and see if it holds vacuum.

Where is the hot air door diaphram located and what does it do? Is it similar to an egr valve? Thank you very much for your reply.

Also the switch that turns the light on (on the left side of the column) has broken clear off. How difficult is it to replace that switch? Just take the screws out to get into the column, or is there a little more to it than that? Thanks again.

It's on top of the air cleaner inlet. It operates a door to switch from cold to hot air as needed. (Did you ever wonder what that hose going to the exaust manifold was for.)

If I remember right you have to replace the entire combo switch on those. The steering wheel and both column covers have to come off.

Thanks for the quick reply I appreciate it. I've done lots of works on cars but never taken a steering wheel off, where do I start to take it off? Is the combo switch big $$? Could I possibly take one out of a car at a pick n pull? Thanks again, this is alot faster than the other tech sites.

This is correct.
