Default MIZU rad and fans install

I got the MIZU aluminum rad, MIZU silicon rad hoses and MIZU dual rad fans W/shroud from... http://www.sparkplugs.com/

Unfortunately the fan assembly was damaged in shipping

I contacted sparkplugs.com and the apologized for the inconvenience and said they would send me new ones and return UPS "slips", by the weekend they were here

They even sent me a new rad as I had mentioned the upper mount pins were off a little, but no biggie, I had made a minor mod to compensateAttachment 216834 hardly noticeable unless you look...

Started, obviously, by draining the cooling system...

The mounting tabs on the shroud were all bent a little. some more then others so a little persuasion in the vice, [wrapped tabs with paper shop towels to prevent marking them up] is all it took to get them nice and straight

I also noticed the shroud was a little bent, on a flat surface I could "rock" it a little...

The rad also had a "flaw" due to my hasty unpacking...
Name: car 042.jpg
Views: 1867

A little work with a set of needle nose pliers fixed that...

I assembled the rad, and shroud on the bench...
Name: car 036.jpg
Views: 1820

and because I am **** about chit like that, I had to make sure shroud sat flush/even all the way around the rad, so a little "prying' with plastic tool was in order...

I am not sure I like the gap at the top and bottom of shroud, I would thing it would be easy for MIZU to design the shroud so it covered the whole rad core surface

Armergaurd, yes.
I got tired of repainting it every few years, and you would not think a plastic cone, [autocross] could realy mark up a clip, but at 80+ KPH if you hit a cone it will leave a mark, not any more. 94

For anyone wondering about the missing pictures, I am working on it.

Nice writeup. Kinda wish I'd gotten a shiny aluminum rad instead of an OEM piece years ago when I replaced mine! Maybe someday.

With that out of the way, it's install time, you would think with a hole that big...
Name: car 034.jpg

It would be no problem, however with the stock exhaust and heat shield...
Name: car 035.jpg
Views: 2556
Size: 75.3 KB

That was a no go, so off with the heat shield, [wonder if this is going to be an issue with the new headers]...
Even then it is a problem...
Name: car 064.jpg
Views: 1733
Size: 81.2 KB

The top mounting brackets had to be modified a little, straightened out...

Size: 62.7 KB

It made installing the top brackets easy...
Name: car 031.jpg
Views: 1767
Size: 108.2 KB

I also had to shorten the top hose a little...
Name: car 016.jpg
Views: 1800
Size: 77.4 KB

It took a 30 mile trip at 80+ KPH and then stopping and letting car idle with a piece of cardboard in front of rad to get the fans running, this rad works great.

Temp. gauge has always gone to the center point, [normal temp.] with rad fan turning on intermittently as I stop at a light or something, now I can not get the gauge to go past 1/3...

and that is after sitting and idling for 15min. after a a couple good burns around the parking lot, [autocross style].

I think I am going to like this MIZU stuff.

The exhaust manifold is going to be an issue, will work on that this weekend, I plan in making new top brackets so I can move top of rad forwards, [about 1/2 an inch] that will help, I will also mod the rad fan a little, get rid of spacers and trim the front edge a little and get another 1/2 inch.

Maybe a heat shield on back of rad fan motor, replace the thin aluminum MIZU name plate on the back of the motor with a thicker plate and stand it off the back of the motor a little to give it an airgap. 94

How much did that setup run you? Fairly unimpressed with the amount of work that you had to do in order to get it to fit. Have you noticed any warping of the endtanks? In my experience with "no name" radiators, the end tanks begin to bulge after time. I have not seen that with any Koyo that I have owned. But a Godspeed that I had at one point had this issue, so I scrapped it and went back to OEM.

Your "unimpressed", the point is that it is supposed to be a "drop in" install

But it apparently was not a drop in. I was just asking the price and some follow up questions.

And I am not unimpressed with anything about you. Just with the fitment of what I assume is a marketed as a OEM replacement cooling solution. As stated, I have run Koyo setups on various cars in the past, and the fitment was superb. However, the $100 Godspeed off of eBay that I tried was a piece of junk. But as they say, you get what you pay for...

No it was not, and I am still not done.

It is not markeded as an OEM replacement. it is markeded as an aluminum racing radiator for a G3 Integra.

To this point it has not cost me nothing but time, I am doing "field" testing for sparkplugs.com here is their pricing... http://www.mizuracing.com/ 94

basically, a koyo / FAL fan combo fits like clockwork.....it also sets you back $600

koyo even has two models depending on if you have a denso or showa

the biggest bitch about lower end radiators is the lack of copper brazed tubing. from what i've seen cheaper rads can be leaking in a year or two

OT I got ya. I went to their site and I see that it is $210. That answers my question. Good work getting it in, and for those looking to save a buck, this is not a bad option. At least you got the customer service backing of a legitimate online retailer. I've been building imports for 10+ years, and this is my first Honda, that I have had for about 18 months now, and I had not heard of the brand Mizu before.

I had never heard of MIZU either, I autocross my Teg and have almost since new, the stock rad went in the first 2 years, replaced it with an aftermarket "OEM" replacement, it went a year later, replaced it with an aftermarket dual core, replaced it with a triple core for better cooling, it popped a seam so I reinstalled the duel core at about the same time this opportunity came up, [sparkplugs.com was looking for someone to "field test" what I understood to be a new product for them].

I googled some info on MIZU and found the linked site at sparkplugs.com, $220 for an aluminum rad seemed cheap, [compared others I have seen] I don't know if I would have considered MIZU products if I was looking to buy.

However, I needed a new rad, and with the opportunity to get it for free, it was a no brainier, so far I am impressed, the build quality of the rad was very good, the glitch with the first rad, [upper mounting pins "off" a little] may be a "one of" or a lack of QC by MIZU, it was minor but sparkplugs.com sent me a new one anyway, along with the fans and shroud that was damaged in shipping, and the turnaround was pretty quick also.

As mentioned there are other issues, [drivers side fan proximity to stock exhaust manifold].

I will be dealing with that today, making new upper rad mount brackets and maybe modding the fan a little.

Will post up results later today. 94

OK, today started OK and ended shitty.

Got to work on the top rad brackets to move the rad ahead a little, started with some scrap aluminum that I drilled holes in to bolt together so I could make two identical pieces, no metal shear so I had to hack saw them...Name: car 082.jpg
Views: 1641
Size: 70.4 KB

Once the where the same size, [about 1"X3"] I bent them into shape...
Name: car 088.jpg
Views: 1705
Size: 84.7 KB

Then drilled out the mounting holes and with a hole saw holes for the rubber grommet...
Name: car 089.jpg
Views: 1707
Size: 84.5 KB

That got me about 1/4"...
Before

Does not look like it but there is almost a 1/4" clearance now, will maybe do the fan mod tomorrow for more clearance, a buddy was going to clay-bar and polish the car, but that was the shitty ending of today.

Two years of restoring the car and I get hit by a little old lady turning left, she was stopped waiting for traffic to clear and as I was going past her, see drives into me...

So sad, my body-shop guy is going to cry, he put so much work into the car making it perfect, [replaced both rear quarters]. 94

Because of the accident I am not driving the car right now, [suspension damage] so I have not been able to do a lot of testing with the new rad other then running the engine on hot days.

So far the engine temp has not gone up enough to trigger rad fans, it goes to about the 1/3 way point on the gauge...
Name: car 075.jpg
Views: 1661
Size: 58.3 KB
and stays there, if I block the rad, [cardboard] for a few min. the temp will go to the center of gauge and the rad fans will turn on, for 10sec. or so and the temp. drops to the 1/3 way point right away.

Car goes into body shop on Mon. and IU should have it back by the end of the week. so more "rigorous" testing of the rad and rad fans can be done, got a fresh bottle of nitrous oxide today, I got to like the guys at the shop I get the bottle filled at, they freeze the bottle over night and then fill it from a frozen charge cylinder, it gets you a "full" bottle, lots of spraying.
More to come. 94

So there is going to be a problem, after only a few WOT W/nitrous, exhaust manifold heat is going to be an issue, [as I thought it may].

Have removed rad fan from that side...
