.. You remember when you first signed up here on Honda-Tech.com? I do.. In this very forum.. and it was very welcoming at the time..
A long time ago a buddy set me up on here, Registered.. set up my account, all that jazz.. I've been here since.. Started at 14-15 years old. I did not know everything and still do not.
Remember that we all had to start at one point, I notice a lot of you all being overly harsh on some of the newer members and flaming.. While I do not agree with unnecessary flaming, but if you don't exactly plan on being mr. nice guy, you could at least give them an educational lesson on how things work around here.. give them more of a warm welcome, rather than rude *** crass remarks.. and understand where they might be coming from.. Just now getting there first car, etc
And as always if you see something out of place or classifieds.. Report the posts with this icon ''

Remember it is important that we help the younger generation and help educate them as they join this Hobby and post on these forum's with us..

+10,000 , I'm sick and tired of watching the same few members, who've only been here a short time like myself, constantly flaming and belittling people that may be asking the same question's as have been previously answered, Get off you're high horse and if you're not helping answer the question, don't bother posting.....
Agreed.
The funny thing is, those same guys that flame others for asking a redundant question, usually asked similar questions when they were n00bs.
if you see a n00b asking what CAI he should get for his 94 Civic, do 1 of 3 things. Answer him, kindly tell him about the search button or leave the thread and go to another.

If you see someone blatantly doing this.. please do not hesitate to let any of us know.. List of moderators at the bottom of the main page.. or message me directly.. As long as you all are willing to help.. It's not going to go on!
I constantly report posts that I feel are either post whoring or have nothing to do with the thread, but yet these particular members are allowed to continue...
But I appreciate what you Moderators are trying to do, I originally joined this sight way back when, but left the scene and recently came back, the site is not the same place it used to be...

i've personally never flamed anybody nor will i ever, i don't believe that's what forums like these are for. Nobody is born knowing everything so dont flame somebody because YOU were there before too.
ps. i still remember my first post (for window visors) and the reason why i joined this forum but i never got to thank the person who helped me so if your still out there thanks BlueIntegraBoy!

As stated in the forum rules sticky at the top, flaming is not tolerated in tech forums. Let's maintain this tech forum as one of the most helpful on the internet. When you see excessively rude posts, please report them by clicking on the Report Post icon that Jimmy posted above.
I think the mods in this section do a good job keeping things tidy and responding to reports. All volunteer work too.
I'm glad I missed the bad years, I left the Honda scene in 2004 after a good 12 year run, than came back in 2009. I just couldn't stay away.
I agree the mods do an outstanding thankless job, keep it up guys.

Let's admit it Jimmy, the search function here is garbage... Everytime I search, i get a bunch of unrelated BS and if I go scour through the forums, I find what I was looking for... Alot of people here don't have the patience to actually look beside using the search function and they post away... The FAQ's are RARELY used, mostly because the search is horrid. Are we really expected to do the searching for them and say "here ya go, chap!"? Ive even had it to where I give my advice, they follow up with another question, i answer, then they ask another question, and so on and so forth... Ok, so if I say "you should replace this" The reply is "where do I find it" "autozone" "how do I install it?".... I mean come on, should we really have to hold their hands? Or is saying "SEARCH" or "GOOGLE IT" inappropriate...
I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment. I have been here for just a minute so I don't have the vast years of H-T experience some of you have. I lurked around for a while, used the search and tried to increase my knowledge. I didn't ask a question that I didn't search for prior because I knew SOMEbody had to have asked it before I did. Some of you would probably label me as one of those negative influences that you plan to start weeding out. I'm not a favorite of the moderators. It's was pretty negative when I got here (before I even registered) and it has gotten worse.
On other forums H-T does not rate very highly and it's reputation ranked very poorly. The blame for that cannot be laid solely on the shoulders of the members only. There are moderators and administrators on H-T that should be monitoring the situation so some of the fault is theirs for allowing it to get so bad. So at the risk of making myself public enemy number one with the H-T staff let me say plainly that part of the blame lies with you as well.
So let me tell you how I got here.
I have noticed over the last few years an influx of people that don't follow the rules, flaunt the rules or just don't give a rat's *** about the rules. And they'll even tell you as much. Nothing happens to these people. Most of the time you can report people and it's taken care of. Sometimes it isn't. Yes I know we all had to start somewhere but how many "How do I make may car faster?" threads do we need? How many "How should I spend my money?" threads do we really need? Do we keep tolerating the "What do I need to swap X engine into my Civic?" thread simply because it's tech but has been answered a thousand time before? How is a "How do I paint my rims?" a technical question? How many "What X is the best?" threads is sufficient?
I've seen people get told to go to hell when referred to search even though there is a thread stickied up at the top of the forum on HOW to use the H-T search function. Some will tell you right there that they aren't going to search and would rather clutter up the boards with another of the same thread that we get to see dozens of times in a given span of time. Then you get other members who tell you to pretty much do the search for the new guys when they could have done it themselves. So is it any wonder now that people honestly cannot find the thing they are searching for because of all the clutter and needless repetition that is allowed to go on, that they have to wade through when the DO search? And yes the search DOES work. I can find Atlantis using the search feature. And not I'm not talking about the crappy little box at the top right. THAT is garbage.
I've seen non-tech posts started and allowed to flourish pages long, in direct violation of the rules that ALL threads be tech related. I've seen posts that should be moved to other forums remain untouched. I've seen, no lie, 3 posts on the front page in one day all asking how to make more horsepower to their civic. I've seen the same questions asked dozens of time that can be answered directly from reading the FAQ. In other forums here at H-T those same repetitive threads get locked and the user is told to check the FAQ. You know what? Those forums are cleaner, easier to navigate and find things one that are more relevant. I've seen irrelevant posts allowed to go on because maybe, possibly somehow in the future some tech might develop out of it.
I may be abrupt and pretty short with some and may respond to some questions with what some of you might call irrelevant answers but there is no one on H-T that has not done it before. I've seen it. I've read it. I don't condone outright name-calling but I must tell you that a few weeks went by where people were getting out of hand and unfortunately so did I. It was brought to my attention and I corrected my behavior. Again there is NO ONE on H-T that hasn't been guilty of it so no finger pointing or holier-than-thou attitudes please.
So please tell me who is going to stick up for the people that come here to get pure tech and have to wade through the garbage and the clutter? From all the new people that have no respect towards people that do not seem to want to give them absolutely everything they ask for on a silver platter? If the answer is "no one" please let me know and I'll go dust off my membership at some other forum.

Grumble,
Nobody is finger pointing, I think Jimmy's point is what's past is past and that the buck stops here. They have to find a starting point to cleanup exactly what you are talking about.
But is it really that hard to just not respond to a thread that you feel is in forum policy violation and report it or ask the Original poster politely to move the thread, point them towards the search function, etc? That's my personal take and opinion.

grumble actually delivered. *golf clap*
For the record I just received 3 PM's saying my "conduct" is inappropriate by telling someone to search. So you're not the only one on the hit list... Go through my posts... 95% of them are actually helpful and to the point, and I even bit my tongue on alot of stuff that could have been prevented with RESEARCH.

I point plenty people to the search function. Even give them the link to it and most of the time get told to go to hell or told that they "searched" already or I'm told to *&%^* myself. If I tell someone to search the FAQ I get told my response was useless. I won't direct them in such a manner in teh future.
Better yet, (and I've seen this on other forums), you must answer a tech related question, etc, for members to join. I am also a member on supraforums.com and had to go through this procedure... It's pretty simple questions, but requires you to either know your homework already, or find the answer. If you don't know how to change a tire, you probably shouldnt be using a forum. simple. For example, someone who doesnt know jack **** about cars is fixing to ask "how can I make an extra 50hp" thread. If he had to know the compression ratio for a 98 spec b18cr (which he probably wont even know what the hell a b18cr is, he wouldnt be able to access the site.

The key is ''searching by topic titles only'' and using quotations around smaller words.. There is a sticky at the top of the forum with 30,000+ views and endless replies about how it works and is effective.
I'm not here to debate.. I'm here to help.. If you see what's going on and some new members are here and wanting to learn, some want to be spoon-fed and do not want to search at all.. Report the post and that is our job to do things on our end.

Ron is in here a lot as well and we're both on the same page.
I also might add.. if you suggest someone to search.. link them to a thread and link them to the search engine.. it's proof it does indeed work.
I'm tired of the rambles about the Search engine, These rambles used to come from myself, Until I realized it actually works, BUT it's not effective if nobody uses it.
If you are taking the time to tell someone to '' SEARCH '' then take the time to link them to something useful you found with searching, so I can come behind you and Lock it down. Obviously they didn't Search thus being the reason the thread was created... a long with the other same topics that get created over, and over and over again.
When they realize these topics are getting locked, it's only going to take a matter of time before we start catching on and realizing it's not going to fly and hey I HAFT to search.. Why? Because the content is out there.
I point plenty people to the search function. Even give them the link to it and most of the time get told to go to hell or told that they "searched" already or I'm told to *&%^* myself. If I tell someone to search the FAQ I get told my response was useless. I won't direct them in such a manner in teh future.
Also understand that when we reply to these ''repeat'' threads some are frustrated and over seeing these same post's.. try to tone it down, not be so aggressive with your words.. report the thread and know that it's most likely going to be closed.
H-T wishes to encourage people from all levels (beginners, experienced, and professionals) to become active members on this site. We do not want to chase away ANY members, unless they are disruptive.
In my opinion, directing and instructing members to use the search function is perfectly fine, as long as such responses are polite and coupled with an attempt to answer the tech question.

I have now made this thread a sticky so that, at least temporarily, members may voice their thoughts on this important topic.
The thread works if done correctly, but as grumble has pointed out, if you use the search at the top right of the forums, it automatically does it by most recent post and not by most relevent. This is the first function most people use. I've also seen alot of repetitive thread that are locked and not deleted to begin with. They still uselessly linger down the front page and will be brought back up for a search inquiry, thus making the search function more frustrating. I have been a frequent visitor since 2003 and just recently started an account. This forums been the same as long as I can remember. It could use a facelift and some tweaking of the features... Just my .02. Also, read ^^ about the question to register idea. This will force new members to get used to the idea of having to look for the answers...
I vote to get rid of all the simple search functions that are default for all these VBulletin installations. They don't work.
