Default tuned w/o air filter...now what?

I went to get my car retuned. Last time she made 395hp. Long story short I cleaned my air filter a month before getting her tuned. Used soap and water and let her dry (fujita filter) that's what they said to do. When I was getting her tuned shawn at church said it was making 30 less hp which was indicitive of a restriction somewhere. After looking around he asked me about the air filter. He decided to take it off and the power was back to 395 area.

The question is now i got tuned w/o a filter. I want to run a filter. I have a fair amount of space for it and I obviously ruined my filter. Should I just get the biggest k and n I could fit in there.

Is there going to be any huge power loss. Is it possible to get a high flowing filter that will move the cfm needed ? Thank you in advance for any advice.

Is there a big difference between running no filter or a high flowing filter? I thought I read somewhere there wouldn't be much of a difference at all.

My turbo is a garret 57 trim boosting 14 lbs.

Or course there is going to be a difference. Youre going from running a screen to a filter. Theres a restriction in air flow from it which is going to cause you to lose horsepower.

But look at the positives, you wont suck in any rocks, dust, or whatever else may be around. Your turbo will live to see another day.

Well I know a screen is worse than a high flow filter with a decent cfm due to extremely small surface area. The question is if I find and fit a filter that moves more cfm than my turbo at peak power could pull, then would there be a diff?

Hoow much hp are we talking? Do I got to get it retuned with a filter? Loss in boost?

do you run a wideband? if not get one and check your AFR's in boost before and after the filter change...

No wideband, I just don't want to have to get it retuned. If I can get away with 10 hp loss and no other ill effects I would be happy.

My AFR didnt change at all between all 4 of my filter setups;
Screen->Screen+pantyhose->mini-filter->big AEM dryflow

you'll be fine

find something big. a 200mm hks mushroom would be one thought. it gives you the ability to run a wet filter or a 3 layer dry.

sounds like the filter you had was just too restrictive for the amount of hp you're making
