Icon3 A/C Condenser - 2005 Civic...help!

Hello everyone!

My AC recently quit on me and had a diagnostic done at my Honda dealer. The mechanic told me that the AC condenser needs to be replaced and he gave me a $750 quote for Honda parts and service. The condenser by itself is $450 from Honda or else $300 for an aftermarket condenser...yikes!

I did some research online and found MANY other condensers, both used Honda condensers and new aftermarket condensers from $75 to $200.

Can anyone recommend to me a condenser that I should consider buying?

Are aftermarket condensers necessarily "bad"?

Some aftermarket brand include: TYC, Modine...

Any help would be great!

Mine blew out on me. The clutch fell apart internaly and siezed which burned up the belt. That bill with the belt replacement and towing was $900 so id say its an average quote. If you are planing on keeping the car for awhile keep it oem. If you are going to ditch it soon fix it with what saves you money.

He's asking about a condenser, not a compressor.

I bought the cheapest one Rockauto had, about $100. I don't remember if it even had a name on the box.

It's been on a little over a year now, and works fine.

Replace it yourself, it's not hard at all. Once you get the bumper off, which only takes about 5 min., everything is very accessible. Then take it somewhere for a vac, recharge.

Aftermarket A/C condensers aren't necessarily bad but the build quality would most likely not be as consistent as that of an OEM unit. You may install one in your '05 and be perfectly fine for years and years. Alternatively, the aftermarket unit may work fine for a year or so then spontaneously break down on you one day. Thus, it remains imperative for you to do your homework by scouring as many consumer reviews as you can for the evoked set of aftermarket condensers and then you can make a much more informed purchasing decision.

I've considered replacing the A/C condensers in my cars with aftermarket units in order to save a buck or two but have had way too many friends experience problems with their aftermarket units. So when it came time for me to replace my A/C condenser in my Civic I went with an OEM one (it was only 300 bucks for a legit OEM unit at http://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine...0-S5A-T01.html) for the added peace of mind. 5 years later and it's still blowing strong!

Just my two cents on the issue. Good luck with your repairs!
