Default Tach reading two times too high?

I bought a 92 DA a couple months ago and I have this problem that is driving me crazy.
On my OEM cluster, my rpm needle reads around 1500 rpms at idle and is all the way pegged at redline. I have tried swapping the cluster and distributor, no luck.
The car came equipped with an autometer rpm gauge which works fine and acurately.
I want to get rid of my big blue autometer guage and shift light, just looks stupid.

I HAD a problem almost similar like that, my RPM gauge fluctuates when I'm driving it.

That is a different problem, that is usually caused by a lose connection on the ignitor pins in the distributor.
