Default West Coast Headwork?? who's the best??

Hi Guys: Just asking for opinions here. I have done just about every mod to my Type R except headwork and am looking for a vote of confidence. I've heard Dan Paramore does good work and Portflow as well. What do you think? I would like the work to be done over this winter....any one else do crazy head work? - i'm talking all out here.

My car:
B18C5 with Mugen CAI, taperbore TB, stock intake manifold, Toda B's and valvetrain, Endyne/Wiseco 81.5mm Hi-comp (12.5:1) pistons, Eagle forged rods, dynamically balanced bottom end, Spoon lightweight FW, Spoon 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, Spoon cat-jack, Mugen twin-loop exhaust, RC 310 cc/min injectors, and Hondata Stage 2 tuning.

DPR has done bernardo martinez' headwork and he's getting rather good dyno numbers. there's also rebello in norcal.

Joe Alaniz did the valve job on my cylinder head when I blew my head gasket a year ago.. I highly recommend him since he back up all his work with a flow bench result plus he is responsible for porting the head of one of the world's fastest Honda NA dragster..

I haven't got my cyl head back yet but I took it to Joe Alaniz also. I can't wait since I have witnessed how nice of a guy he is and very knowledgeable when it comes to this field of performance head porting, .

I needed to bring this back to life since I'm about ready for a rebuild. What's considered a fair price? I went to the Portflow site, and saw something saying a general head job was $900. Is this the going rate for IT spec head work?

John -- who thinks $900 for head work isn't fair since the entire spare motor was a fraction of that.

The price will vary upon what the condition of your cylinder head is.. A typical valve job should be around $300 including valve seals... A worn out valve guide and valve seats will drive cost higher...

I'm going to have my CRX Si cylinder head work by Joe Alaniz and it's going to conform to the ITA rules... I still don't know the price as of this moment..

I am currently rebuilding my engine, after talking to alot of people about getting headwork done, portflow was recomended alot

I think import builders uses them too

not many companys have the $$$ to put into research and quality machines

DPR charges around 1500 USD for his Stage VI (includes welding).

http://www.dpr-racing.com/stages.htm

A guy in Vancouver had his B18C5 head done by Dan and swears by him (but the engine spun a bearing at Vancouver Indy and has been dead for a while - so I never got to experience the work in person/ drive with it at the track)

wow, thats a good amount of money,
do you mind me asking on why you dont just put more money into track time/driving school?

if you want to spend more money and get more power, is there something holding you back from a 2.0 liter setup?
Well I guess with b's you are going to need to rev high, which the 2.0's to my understanding to like to go to 9k everyday

btw, who did lip's head work? wasnt he pushing 240ish whp

1500 can also get you a ITB setup

I just bought a spare motor for $150 that has a toasted valve. Plans are to completely rebuild it over the next few months. I've never sourced head work before and was shocked at that price. Maybe that's the going rate, I don't know. The IT rules don't allow a lot of work in this area. Maybe I'll put a call into Portflow and OPM and see what IT head rebuilds run.

i think the east coast guys get their work done thru sunbeam. as for price, custom professional engine work, especially when there are rules and its all about getting the most within rules, takes skilled and experienced work. i've heard a IT rebello built complete honda engine costing $6000. yeah its the cost of a "new" engine, but we're talking about guys who are willing to do anything to be competitive. if you just want to replace parts to freshen up the engine, then anyone can do that. youre paying them to make power where there isnt much room to work with. or maybe im just a sucker for thinking of paying $$$ for it all... ill be getting my DPR head this weekend hopefully...

I've been to 20+ HPDEs over the last 2 years.

Cost is not a concern - value for the dollar is.

Big Phat R, who did your motor mods? Nice setup..
I think you will be very happy with either Portflow, DPR, or Joe Alaniz.
