1996 Honda Accord 4cyl - possible balance shaft seal oil leak (pictures included)
Hello all,
I am not new to Hondas, a member of cb7tuner.com and cd5tuner.com, but cannot figure out this oil leak. Basically, the problems started when the engine failed to start (rotated, but no start). After some troubleshooting , I had to tow the car to a mechanic. The spark plugs were covered in oil which which were replaced along with new wires, valve cover gasket, and spark plug tube gaskets. The mechanic offered to check the timing belt at no charge which was my big mistake because now there is an oil leak just next to the top timing cover. This oil leak was never there since I check the car every month. It runs down the bottom timing cover, to the oil pan, and the to the ground. See photos.
Thanks
Frank

Oil usually tends to leak downward, not upwards and the balance shafts are located below where your oil is. It's probably the valve cover leaking, a cam seal, or leftover oil from when the valve cover was changed.
Thanks for the responses. I thought it was spilled oil when the valve cover gasket was changed, but the oil kept leaking. The suspected area by the valve cover gasket looks ok, but I need a small mirror to verify it.
I am going to remove the upper timing cover and see if there is oil present.
Included are two more pictures.
Thanks again.

Whats up everybody,
I just wanted to say that this problem is fixed. It was the valve cover gasket. The first mechanic damaged it when putting it in. Its been about 6 months and no oil leak. That area behind the timing cover is dry and clean.

What kind of valve cover gasket did you end up using?
i noticed that your swaybar bushings are about to go. I suggest u buy some poly bushings.and its very easy to change them.

I used the Honda OEM gasket with the spark plug tube seals, they are much better than aftermarket or the ones from AutoZone. Either case, damaging the gasket will result in my case. This oil leak was bad, but now the car runs good, 176K miles.
