Default Getting back into riding ('05 CBR600RR)

I don't normally venture into this part of the forum, but it looks pretty active. Want to know your thoughts on my purchase (probably later this evening).

Back in the late 90s, I used to race Yamaha TZ250s. Later on in 2003 or so, I bought my friend's Suzuki GSX-R 750. It was my first streetable bike, and although it was most likely too much for a "new" rider, I got quite comfortable at it. Sold it soon afterwards as I knew myself to be too reckless and I sped way too often. I was just too young to handle it maturely.

Now that I'm 32 years old, have a home, and a car already, my friend and I decided to get back into things. My license is obviously long expired and I haven't ridden on anything other than a scooter since 2004 or so. I still know how to ride, based on a few test rides I did this week. Doing some research online, it appears that technology changed quite a lot since my bike in 2001. The 600s today blow the heck out of the 750s from back then. This will be a weekend (and maybe a commuting bike to work (8 miles away)) bike. I don't plan on doing any track days (maybe in a year or go). I don't do burnouts, or wheelies, and don't plan on doing any.

I'm looking at picking this up later today. I already went through tons of Ebay and Craigslist ads with multiple conversations with sellers.

It's a 2005 Honda CBR 600RR. Got it down to $4800 including Joe Rocket riding jacket, gloves, battery tender, and 2 HJC helmets all in matching colors. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the color. I would have liked something a little more colorful, but as I understand it, you can change colors pretty easily (paint, new fairings, etc).

Specs
2005 Honda CBR 600RR
5,000 miles
Never dropped/crashed
Totally stock except for front turn signals (even has the factory rear)

Went to see it last night and it looked great. Still on original tires and brakes, since the mileage was so low. Cold start was fine, and the idle was very smooth and quiet. It wasn't registered so the owner didn't really ride it around, but he did give it a go around the neighborhood slowly. Looked fine. Tracked straight.

Thoughts?

Not sure how long this picture link will last.

do you even want his gear? buying someone elses helmets are never a good idea in my opinion because you dont know what its been through, just because this bike hasnt been wrecked doesnt mean he hasnt owned other bikes. tell him to keep his gear and offer up 4k, if you keep the gear then its not worth more than 4500 in my eyes because you're gonna need new tires soon, but this is just my opinion

Thanks for the suggestion. I asked him just now. He was actually VERY firm at $5K without gear. I got him to $4800 with gear so I'm not too sure how much lower he'd go. I know I know...shows how "firm" he is, but still. He's been getting a lot of offers since in my area it's actulaly a very low price.

Great mileage, great condition, 4,800 is a fair price, especially since he's chucking in a jacket and gloves and a tender. I agree with Deadmau though, don't bother with the helmets, you never know.

If it's the style of bike you want then go for it, not a bad deal.

That's a great deal! I think so.. I'm looking at buying my first bike. The one I'm looking at is an 06 cbr600 with 14000 miles and they want $5400. Its for sale at a dealership so plus tax and fees.

In your case your getting a bike with lower miles, never been down, original owner, bone stock, if you like it buy it. Keep a few things in mind tho, yiu might want to do a full tune up, change the spark plug, battery, tires stuff like that cuz it is 6 yrs old and hasn't been riden recently.

I had an '03 and an '06 - they are pretty tame. Even an accidental gas blip won't surprise you, unless you're playing above 12k rpms.

The bike itself is not tame. It will bite you in the *** in a second, The rider should have his/her head on straight. Take the bike out on some twisties and ride at your own pace. The 600rr is so maneuverable. Riding in a straight line gets old REAL QUICK. Short shift and stay below 9000 RPM and youll be ok.

no 600+ cc bike should be taken lightly, but eventually it will get old and you'll want to step it up, either to a newer model or to a 750cc, and i personally wouldnt go any higher than that because you've gotten used to the feel and weight of a smaller frame. dont be fooled by all of the ****in 1000cc kickstand riders that think straight line action is what a sportbike is made for, theyll try to get you to jump on one in a heartbeat.

I've ridin a 750 gsxr and that scares me. I don't like reving it all the way cuz I can feel the front wheel wanting to lift up. I guess for a practice bike it did its job but makes me want to get a cbr600rr instead, plus I figure you can do a lot with a honda moto just like a car.

The 600 is a good size to start out with. You can ride anything as long as you got your head on straight and respect the power thats between your legs. I started out on a 2007 cbr600rr. the 07-08 is a 10.79 bike from the factory in the quarter mile. Now thats fast! Just keep in mind new riders to always be cautious, take your time, and go riding with someone whos going to show you the ropes. Be safe and always wear your gear!
