Replacing piston rings in jdm 96 spec type r
Whats up h-t.im going to be replacing my rings this weekend and have a few questions.yes I did search..i wanna get oem rings from honda, will the usdm type r rings work?? What are the ring gaps on the jdm type r? And I heard alot about positioning the ring gaps in a certain place how do I put them?? Ive been working on hondas for a few years so I know I can do it myself just want to get everything figured out first before I start tearing my motor apart...help is greatly appreciated.the reason why im doing this is cuz im going through like a qt of oil a day (i know its alot) ive changed my valve seals with no luck valve guids and seats looked good.changed head gasket and pcv valve no luck eaither my car smokes like a freigt train when accelerating and like I said burns oil like crazy and I have no leaks.so last thing on my list is rings my compression is 265 accross the board when motor is cold but ive been hearing that my compression rings are good but my oil rings can be shot.sorry for the long post just wanna figure this out.car is stock just header and fuel rail its also tuned thnx in advance
there is no difference in the setup between usdm and jdm. just follow the book, actually have someone who's built a bottom end before help you. make sure you measure the cylinders for out of round and you should pay the machine shop for an actual hone. does a better job than the brush and drill
Thnx for the reply..i know I can do it by myself I just want all the correct numbers so I dont screw up on it.i can go buy a helms but im tight on money and dont wanna spend 70 bucks on one I know someone has to have the answer to my questions on here lol..
helms manual is free, no need to buy it.

OP, keep in mind that many were at Expo the past few days.
Did you perform a leakdown test? Does it burn oil all of the time or just on startup?

I havent done a leakdown test yet..and it burns oil constily ill be full on oil drive across town come back and it will be low it smokes like crazy only when im on it but even if I just cruise it still blows through oil..i replaced the valve seals didnt replace seats or valve guides cuz they looked good..like I said b4 my compression was 260 265 across wen motor was cold hard to believe its my rings but what else can it be...car runs stong no problems at all besides the smoking and oil loss and I dont have any oil leaks so thats not my problem..it is straight pipe with no cat or resonator so I should expect a little smoke but its no where near little.smoke looks blue when im driving but on the dyno it was more of a greyish black.but blue means oil and im losing it so idk its driving me nuts.any help is appreciated.
yea thats what im thinking to ill do it and if its not the problem atleast ill have new rings..but I still need to know the ring gap for the jdm itr I went to that link but there was nothing for a type r so if anyone has the numbers for the ring gap can you please let me know thanks for the replys guys....

Ok so I called the stealership and they want like 42.00 bucks per piston for the rings...so I called a local place and I can get hastings or npr rings for way cheaper..my question is do I still use the oem ring gap specs or the gap specs from the hasting or npr rings?????
I dont wanna cheap out but I live in bakersfield ca and there aint **** her unless I drive for hrs...i did some research on those rings and heard that they were pretty good and work realy well...just need to stop my car from smoking like a traing and going through a court of oil like every 50 miles
Im waiting on my direct deposit to kick in and this is my only car im not going to keep driving it like this I rather just get it fixed asap instead of ****ing it up anymore u feel me

Ok so I got the hasting rings and it says to gap the top ring .004 for every I.ch of the cylinder but doesnt say anything about the second ring and oil rings so what do I gap those to???
