Intermittent Honda Accord air conditioning - and engine overheating
My 2002 6 cylinder Accord has AC trouble. I noticed it a little last year, this year it's serious.
When driving at low speeds or stopped at a light it fairly frequently stops blowing cold air. In fact, the air becomes almost warm and feels a bit moist. I thought it might just be the compressor "getting a bit lazy" in its old age or perhaps a belt slipping.
But last week, while crawling home in Boston traffic, I noticed that when the cool air stopped the engine temperature gauge climbed fast, and high. Now that I'm looking for this I've seen it a couple times since.
Speeding up the engine (either putting it in neutral and giving it gas or by accelerating when the traffic starts moving again) starts the cooling again after a few seconds and the temp gauge drops.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the input.
Both fans do work, I checked just this morning.
Why replace the thermostat? I understand that overheating can be a thermostat problem but why would the air conditioning stop working AND THEN the temperature rise dramatically?

This morning I picked up the car after having had the timing belt, serpentine, water pump, and thermostat replaced (the thermostat was a "just in case" item that didn't cost much since they had the car apart anyway). They also found the AC system was down about half-a-pound out of, so they tell me, a prescribed level of about 1.5 pounds.
I'll report back in a few days as to my success - or lack thereof.

I have nearly the same issue. 2007 Honda Pilot. A/C works OK (not great) at speed but goes warm at idle or stopped. I just realized the temp gauge is too hot when just parked with engine running and cools a bit when at speed. The larger fan runs for 5-10 minutes after the car is turned off. The smaller fan was not working and I am not sure if it works while moving.
I was told maybe the compressor is failing but need more diagnosis..What was your end result?

Same problem exactly - 2006 Honda Pilot, AC does not cool when car is idle and temp gauge climbs quickly! I noticed a couple of times recently that I hear a fan running after the car has been turned off. The check engine light has been coming on and off for some time now.
Check your AC relay in the underhood fuse box. I just replaced mine today.
If compressor is not fed correct voltage from relay, it will turn off.
This is a simple problem that all Honda owners face and nobody knows how to fix it on these forums. Damn, it's an easy fix!
