Assuming it is all original powertrain, clean title, no paint work, no body work, and in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, that price seems about right. If it fails to meet any of these criteria, it might be too much.

16.5K is a lot for an illegal car. Just know what you're getting into before you buy it.

Whoops, I thought this was a USDM car when I made my post above. $16.5k is a lot for a car that you could lose at any time.

Definitely read through the thread that Dr DC2 linked. It's better to be safe than sorry IMO.

IMO 16.5k is way too much when you consider what other cars that money can buy in this day and age. On the plus side, it'll hold it value exceptionally well and you know, it's a Type R... Though the theft, FWD, and excessive attention may be considered down sides depending on what you're looking for out of your next car.

16.5k will buy a mint condition low mileage GTO, a fantastic E39 M5, conceivably a C5 Z06 Vette, two E36 M3's, a nice S2000, STi, etc etc. These cars are vastly different from a Type R, but one may argue that you get more car for the money with something besides a Type R at that price.

But I guess the question is if that's a fair price for a 98... I suggest you head to the for sale forum here and eBay to research prices. You will quickly discover how widely they can vary in price. As a general rule of thumb, only all-original low mileage cars or K20 swaps go at that price point. I would say that if you have $16,500, you have a huge selection of ITR's to pick from and you should probably spend the extra time to make sure you get exactly what you want.

If you don't have a garate in Philly, you're wasting your time BTW.

If its USDM the OP should look more into it. If its legit JDM then he should walk away from it.

When you say "real deal" ITR is it a RHD JDM one or a normal USDM one? for a 49k stock 98 16k is right in line; however, if it's a imported nightmare machine I wouldn't even pay half that.

it's too expensive and i wouldn't buy a car that could get taken away from me and crushed at any time.

at that price you could pickup a decent US R and have plenty of cash left over to improve it.

though if you have the cash for it, do you intend on driving it often? assuming this R is completely mint (49k is nothing too) and you plan on keeping it tucked away in the garage as a collectable and coming out occasionally for a meet/show then it might be worth the gamble.

The OP said "98 spec real deal type-r"

I assumed he meant Honda ITR because he referred to it as a "98 spec" and who the f*** would buy an ITR on craigslist?

Let me guess... the craigslist ITRs are the luxery models with sunroofs, leather seats, 19" enkeis, 4 lug, and a greddy exhaust? Not hating just thought "craigslist" and "ITRs" should never be affiliated with each other.

7-9k for a craigslist "ITR" is like getting a good deal for a BJ... you still paid for something you shouldnt have gotten off craigslist!

As I'll remind everybody, once again--raw performance numbers don't necessarily make a car hold value or make the model more desirable than another.

The ITR was the best FWD car that north america ever got and probably ever will get. It was made in limited numbers and it has enough 'old school' Honda technology in it to make it easy to work on, yet extremely capable. Plus, things rarely break and you can run the p!ss out of it well over 100K miles.

Can you say the same for any of the cars you listed above? Perhaps the S2000, but Honda made a lot more examples and it just doesn't have the 'rawness' that the ITR has.

Point being, the ITR holds its value rather well for many, many factors. And it should continue to do so for a long time (nice examples, at least).

As to the OP: JDM import cars? No thanks. Especially when you could buy a legal USDM version of basically the same car (minus the stupid RHD).

I understand what you're saying..over priced itr-ls clones..but no, i have seen legitimate full R spec integras going from $7900-$8500 with badge number and clean title and all documents. I have never seen any color except fbp R's.

People should really be trying to find caRs on Craigslist, people there tend to wanna sell fast over the weekend. Test drive and inspections are a must of course.

I sold my 98 CW on craigslist for $8750. It did have 170,000+ on the odometer. It was a great car and I miss it dearly. I still have my 97 but it is stored safely somewhere in the midwest. I really didn't want either to end up torn apart or in Mexico though since I had to move to Texas. The 97 is stored safely.

I wouldn't spend that much money on a JDM ITR. There nice and all but they're a toy. I'd rather put the money towards a brand new car. I spend my 15k on a 2001 R two years ago when I was 19 and now I'm older and see that could have been a down payment on a brand new 3 series that I'd love to own, but don't get me wrong, I don't regret it at all, so I must be a true enthuiast, I guess.
