help just bought a b20 vtec... will not start
the car is a 91 tegra ls... the motor is a b20 with a b16a head... it ran when i purchased it but broke down a day later... the head gasket was blown.. i replaced it without resurfacing the head... i put an after market regulator an bd1 distributor and new obd1 ecu p28... the car just cranks and tries to start but makes an almost poofing noise... im almost possitive the time isnt off... I am thinking it is a bent valve... PLEASE ANY INPUT IS GREAT INPUT
Dont think bent valve would cause a POOFING noise..
Id check all wires on distributer... Ive seen 100 times...
Almost positive time isnt off""??? ha... DOuble check. Those two things i would say off top of my head after head gasket.. seen both time and time again...

checked wires like 10 times but im not too sure how to check the engine timing.... i lined up the 90 degree marks on the gears with the head but when there even the up arrows are both slightly off
Anyway op... This thread has helped me in the past, check it out.

Remove the valvecover and line the motor up to TDC, cam gears pointing up. Dont be lazy, double check yourself is all i'm asking.
If you are sure there is spark and fuel double check yourself. Prime the pump, do you hear it? If so, pull the line going to the fuel rail, make sure you do have fuel. Stick a screwdriver into a spark plug socket and lay it on the body and try to crank the car over , make sure you see spark.
If this all checks out, check your ECU ground and make sure that all the plugs are hooked up correctly. Its quite possible that the ecu, if it isn't chipped, isn't going to start a 2.0 liter motor, when its made for a 1.6. If it is chipped, verify that the chip is for a b20vtec. If not i can send you a bin to start up on.

okay the ecu is chipped for my car ..ebay one...adjusted the timing and got the car. to run very rough... but now it started making a noise like as if there was a bolt in my fan like clicking...not like something was banging in the engine... but like constant tick that changed with the rpms.. i took the timing belt off and tried spinning the crank and it is almost locked out if i dont spin it with some momentum when 2,3 are at tdc.... Im hoping i didnt mess anything up inside the block..
