Hi Guys,
Since the past few days I am facing a wierd problem. Whenever I try revving the car its starts cutting out or limiting itself at approx 5200-5500 RPM(vtec set at 5200 rpm). This happens only on full throttle. If i gradually accelerate then there is no issue.
Got the car scanned but no trouble codes whatsoever. The tuners says its probably a distributor related issue. Any ideas as I do not have access to another B18C distributor here in India. I however do have access to a lot of B16A distributors out here.
Is there anything else I need to chk for.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Hi,
Will chk the plugs and revert. We did go for a street tuning session with the wideband plugged in. Thats when the tuner said it could be distributor related.

Does your tach kind of fluctuate? Like does the needle bounce around a bit between 1000rpm and I guess 5200rpm since thats where its having a problem? I ask because the igniter in the distributor feeds the tach so thats one way to get a hint of something going wrong.
As far as a b16 distributor on a b18c...its a no go. Only an B18C gsr or type-r distributor will work.
Good luck.

OP, check the spark plugs and report back.
Does it clear up after 5200 rpms or does it misfire all the way up to redline?
Have you recently filled up with fuel (possible bad gas?)
About 98.627% sure.
But yea if he has a b18c gsr or type r motor the only distributor that will work would have to be off of a b18c gsr or type r motor.
Unless he's OBD0. I ran a type r motor off an OBD0 b16 vtec distributor in a crx for a while, but thats because the car was still OBD0.

any B series vtec dizzy will work, not sure where your getting your info. as long as its the right obd0. you can also use a ls dizzy if you hack a ear off of it to clear but only 1 bolt will line up, still works though. for how ghetto it is....

Well if it fits a gsr engine that has a P72 head and a type ARGH that has the same casting as a B16, it should fit right?
The only real differences would be the connector and wiring right I think.
I think all B series vtec distributors will bolt up any B vtec head. Of course the wiring is going to be different through the obd0,1,2,2a,2b year changes...
Unless Ive been wrong all these years.

Hi Guys,
Checked the plugs and they are all fine. This is the car in the signature.
@1998GSRIntegra - I have the OE tach as well as a Autometer Phantom tacho. When the problem occurs both tachs act funny and the needle floats between 5000 - 10000rpm.
@ Everyone else - I have purchased a used distributor from Honda Tech should be with me in a weeks time. From what I can see visually the B16A dizzies have 2 sockets whereas the B18c has only one hence will not work. unless i greatly modify the wiring.
Have been told that the internals are the same(ignitor, cpk sensor etc) and we are going to experiment with that till we get the replacement dizzy.
I am using a MSD SS Blaster Coil and have removed the OE internal coil.
BTW - This problem is only happening at WOT. Also on stock intake for the time being.

+1 for a failing igniter
or possibly some bad plug wires letting secondary ignition back into the electrical system.
Jignesh, grab ahold of the plug wires while someone revs up the engine. You should feel nothing if your plug wires are good.

Hi,
Will chk out the plug wires tho i doubt they will be bad as they were recently replaced with the MSD 8.5mm wires.

HI Guys,
Will try and and get someone to take a video of the problem occuring.
@ Bryse68 - Its perfect @75psi.
I have recently built this motor and got it built by a engine builder here in Mumbai. Its clocked approx 800 kms only since the rebuild and is currently on standard intake, injectors & cams for the running in which is now complete.
I was planning on reverting back to the cams & ITB's when this problem occurred. Once rectified will be upgrading to the higher specs.

Verify in Neptune software your rpm signal is accurate when the problem occurs...
If your RPMs seem to read correct and no fault codes are stored, its most likely not an input like a bad sensor, but something on the output side. (like an igniter/ICM)
good luck!

Judging by what your tach is doing I'll stick with my original guess of the igniter going bad. On a different note, toss that MSD crap. MSD has never gotten along with our cars very well. The oem system is perfectly fine for what you have.
an obd2 b16 distributor would bolt up and plug in just fine. I'd wait till the new distributor arrives and see if the problem still occurs. If you can't wait, take one of the odb1 b16 distributors and swap the plugs with your current distributor.
Its still not the same distributor. The comparable would be a b16a distributor off of a 1999 civic si. The civic distributor is a TD-81U while the integra gsr/type r distributor of the same year is a TD-87U. Aside from that they both have entirely different part numbers from honda, meaning they are not the same.

So I changed the igniter with one of a B16a thats working perfectly well and no success problem persists.
Does anyone have any more suggestions on what to look for.
