Angels Crest Highway is now OPEN!
Finally... after 2 years, two floods, and a forest fire, Angels Crest Highway is now open! It actually opened Friday, but today was my first day off of work. So I fitted my brand new EK9 cluster, and drove until I ran out of gas!
With my new cluster, it feels like a different car! I was finally able to rev all the way up to the 9000 rpm range, which I now realize I wasn't doing before!
The Angels Crest was literally washed off the side of the mountain. But now its back, sporting some fresh smoothed out asphalt. Its so new, that it still smells like tar! It now has recessed reflectors, which still make that sound to let you know you are hitting them, but now they don't make you lose control if you hit them while you are going to fast (why didn't they do this before!). With silky smooth curves that you wont see anywhere else, outside of ****. The Angels Crest is a true drivers dream.
It was pretty crowded up there, for it being the first weekend open in over 2 years! And also it was 2pm or 3pm (so shouldn't everyone be at work?). So I wasn't able to get in a good fast time attack going, which is a good thing. Because a couple of things became clear to me as I was driveing. Before I go back there (or any touge for that matter) I am going to need a couple of things.
Car I saw while I was up there... lets see. Various Civic's, Integra's (of course), and 911's, a Scion TC, and a Ferrari 599! An *** load of bikes (both motor and pedal), and just too many SUV's going way too slow.
OH and before I forget, that TC was blue and tried to race me. I passed it up and he never caught back up to me. Just like a Honda should every time it see's a Toyota!
*Also, if you don't know what the Angels Crest is, it is a very sad day indeed.

- I need some new tires (I have a set of Toyo Proxies 4, don't ask).
- Need a new set of brakes (maybe some EBC's).
- Need a new set of coilovers (the amount of understeer was appalling!).
- I need to stiffen the chassis (see #3).

The wind-y canyons that connect to Mullholland Dr in Malibu is my poison. Surprisingly there hasn't been much traffic the times I've gone.
One day I'd like to take the 2 all the way to Lone Pine and connect back to the 15. I love epic drives like that.

I can't go a size wider, my tires are already 7" wide! I am building a HC (Honda Challenge) H2 machine. And per HC rules tires can only be a max of 7" wide.

Believe it or not, they fixed that too! There are walls, banks, and double reinforced guardrails everywhere. You have to be doing something pretty stupid to go off in a car now (like get ejected). I'm more worried about the bikers.

Hahah ya, I was always into there buscuits and gravy. The owner used to make the gravy homemade every morning. Believe it or not this little town is infested with honda heads lol. I work at powder and sun there in town, the shop with the van that has the snowboard rail on it. U ever ride at mountain high?
you can run a 215 on a 7" in. wide rim
go 215/45/16 on that 7" in. rim
you'll feel a difference on angels crest hwy
i've mounted a 215/45/17 tire on a 17x7 rim and 215/50/16 on a 16x6.5

Do you think I will get the sam amount of grip with 55 instead of the 45 you recommend?
Thicker side walls usually creates more flex, minor size differences your debating wont really make much of a difference. But hey its just my opinion and its your car and money.
Thank you. Because of my tire choice (Toyo) I'll have to go 215/55-16. I'll have to try that when I get my Proxies T1R (should have gotten those in the first place, they're the same price as the tires I have now!)

also depends on the compound of the tire.
i'd be worried about going from 45 to 55 sidewall thickness. make sure it'll clear so it wont rub; depending on how much clearance you currently have. not 100% sure, but i have a feeling you'll be fine w/ 215/50/16.
I'll just get my finders rolled, problem solved.
