Don't really know, will be intersted in finding out.....my guess, some sort of alarm/anti theft....can you follow the wires.

What is the car doing or not doing?

 

Ask her what it is. Is she the original owner of the car (did she have whatever it is installed) or did she buy the car with that thing already installed? Where is that thing located? I can't really tell by the photo.

 

That looks like an anti theft system. I had one on a car I purchased new in 1995. I don't remember the manufacturer, but if memory serves correct, it's a valet style anti theft system. You need that key inserted before you can drive.
