Default Tranny compatibility

Hey guys my 03 civic hx manual tranny is trashed and was wondering if I could use tranny from another model civic within 01-05? I was thinking of picking up an ex tranny for cheap and i understand the gear ratios are different and the ex tranny has shorter gears which doesnt bug me just means slightly lower mpg. Any input would appreciated.

The only thing different between the HX and EX tranny is gearing. And there's nothing to plug in being a manual. With the shorter gears the VTEC would engage faster but, the HX engine engages at a lower RPM anyways. See here for differences in the D17A2 (EX) and the HX (D17A6) engines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_D_engine I would think you would be fine with the EX tranny
